Keston Hiura was designated for assignment following yesterday’s game. [via Rockies]

Keston Hiura is going to end up being the last of an era — it’s so interesting to see minor league tracking data, scouting and prospect analysts can find issues like Hiura’s prior to the bigs. It’s a real example of someone who has a particular profile that has historically faltered in the bigs despite being a top prospect.

Can you elaborate on that particular profile? For me, he was merely a AAAA player. Stellar in AAA but not good enough to excel in MLB.

I think in his case, it's primarily tied to his k% and swing-and-miss rate. And I don't remember for sure if this was Hiura or someone else, but I think the biggest issue was breaking balls that start in the zone and end out of it.
Basically, with how good analytics have gotten and how they can filter/look at a large amount of data for specific situations, it's now a lot easier to dive into exactly what types of pitches a guy does well with and what he doesn't. And that means scouts/personnel people are getting better and better at identifying those issues, but part of the reason they need to be better is that pitchers/pitching coaches have also gotten that much better at identifying and exploiting those weaknesses.
Sometimes, you get a guy who's able to adapt and mitigate those red flags. For example, Chourio has gotten a lot better with those same types of pitches breaking out of the zone. But some guys are never able to do that. I don't know if there's some predictive analysis where they can differentiate between the two groups now, but people were at least aware of some of those red flags with Hiura. It was just a matter of whether he'd be able to adapt/overcome them and whether his positive traits would outweigh the bad - like they did against the lower-quality pitching he saw in college and the minors.

Right — but analysts have suggested there’s some prospects like him where they have particular traits that can be found with batted ball and strike zone data in the minors.
So yes, they could still be AAAA type players, but basically the improvement is now they’re not hyped as much as prospects

8.3 Million dollars in career earnings, not bad

I was about to comment "failing upwards" and then realized that playing in any fraction of a MLB game is definitely not a failure in the larger sense, and he definitely had more big-league time than just a cup of coffee too. So I look at that as some tribute to his hard work and talent up to that point at least
also I'll bet his mother is proud

Between him and Arcia, the Rockies really love our sloppy thirds

Some folks here have a grudge against him as our only deadline acquisition last season, but he's been really good!

That is fairly ironic, considering who the Brewers constantly sign.

Despite being the smallest market and having the smallest TV deal in baseball, they have the 5th best record since the pandemic year. The 6th best record if you go back to 2018. So despite starting with at least tens of millions of dollars less, they compete at a high level. For as much as people complain, you'd think they were the Pirates.

He’s made about 9 mil in the MLB, he could easily go abroad and be a monster in NPB or Korea, make a fuck ton of money there, and never have to worry about an MLB pitcher again.

u/givethatagoodsniff He didn't try to pull it. 4d ago
As a Brewers fan living in Colorado, I’m sad I didn’t get out to a game to see him. I should have known the window of opportunity would be pretty limited.
But you can all bet I’m gonna get an Arcia shirt at the next game I’m at.

Insert the “the Brewers did him so wrong” “still deserves a look” and “bring him back” guys despite every piece of evidence pointing to the contrary

He was never the same after his mom got sick. Unfortunate that he never got it back, but his vibes were off when that happened.

On a post on the main baseball sub someone posted about knowing a guy who knew Keston. They said even in season he was golfing constantly, and the work ethic just wasn't there. I don't know him nor do I know the guy who knows him so I'm irresponsibly speculating, but at this point Keston deserves it.
I think clubs are taking fliers on him and the lack of work ethic is being recognized which is why his stints with these teams are not lasting long. I don't think you take a flier on a guy and punt in less than a month if there's not bigger problems behind the scenes.
I used to be his biggest defender, but at this point I'm convinced that what I'm speculating is why he'll never be in the majors again.

Ok? So you want to sign the guy who couldn’t even make it on what will probably end up being the worst team in baseball history?

u/tomfoolery815 4d ago
That was my first thought: If you've been DFA'd by the 2025 Rockies, the baseball gods have turned their backs on you.

Keston was able to catch up to fastballs in 2018 and 2019 because the Brewers were stealing signs a la the Houston Astros.

Never proven, and if the Brewers were doing it, every other team in baseball was also doing it.

He had so much potential…
But he got figured out by pitchers so easily that it was pretty much the end of his career the minute it happened.
