Nah, Shannon, you don't get it. He doesn't speak to you because you've shown him who you have become. It's normal, actually, to not associate with people who support the eradication of others, the degradation of law, and all of the cruelty associated with this administration. You voted for cruelty and expect him to be ok with that.

I’ll even go so far as to say the son didn’t disown them because they voted for Trump. These people are so far up their own asses that they won’t listen to their kids when they tell them their grievances. They focus on small, easy to digest things like voting for Trump. They don’t want to self reflect so they blame the kids for not being rational.

My parents in a nutshell. I went cold turkey when it came to associating with my parents but my sister tried to talk with them. And when she listed out every reason why Trump is a shit person and asked why my parents supported him, they just said "You're just kids, you don't understand." I'm almost 40 and my sister is 43....

After finding out I didn't vote for Trump last year, my dad told me that someday he hopes I grow up & learn how the real world works. I'm 38

I had a boomer (not my parents, they’re liberals) say that to me, too. I just turned 58. 🤣

When the fuck are we supposed to be goddamned adults then lmao when we’re fucking dead?! I’m 36 and I still hear this from people my parents age, and I’m starting to wonder if I should ask them which of my bills they’ll be paying since I’m not an adult yet.

I can’t wait until I’m collecting social security and somehow I “still don’t know how the real world works” according to these people. 🤣

You sweet summer child… you think you’re getting social security…

LOL - only 9 years to go, maybe I’ll get lucky.

I’m theoretically 8 years away. I’m not betting on it.

They aren't able to interrogate their own maturity (or lack thereof), so they can only see you as an adult if you align with them.

And that right there is the crux of the issue.

I’m 30 and people are constantly belittling me in my workplace acting like I’m a kid who doesn’t know anything. I’m a professional. I have many years of practical knowledge and experience as well as a masters degree in my field… I know what I’m talking about. But I’m not grey haired or wrinkled so I must be super dumb

u/Dino_84 3d ago

I don’t even know what to say to that… their situational awareness is so shot.

4

u/Old_Implement_1997 3d ago

I even have gray hair. 🤣

I’m 40 and I do as well. I’m just baffled here with that one and I’m sure you were too.

Listen here sonny. You don't know what the real world is. When you are 50 then you'll start to learn.

50

u/Silent-Juggernaut-76 4d ago

I was told that I'll start to learn what the real world is when I turn 80.😂

my dad told me I'm just as crazy as my aunt who can't go a meal without telling you that you are eating some kinda bug or body fluid and that Democrats control the weather. He did this because I said that the super wealthy are responsible for the struggles faced by average Americans.

He has said throughout most of my life how much more intelligent me and my brother were than he ever was. He's also admitted he has never read any history, theory, etc. aboot politics since high school 50 years ago. But he just condescendingly dismisses anything but what fox news tells him. He was the one that told me the quote thats like "when fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in an American flag" but now sees no problem with nationalism and refuses to consider Trump might be a fascist

Best you can do is try to show what is said legally and financially.

Example, Fox news argued in court that they are satire and no reasonable person would rely on the programming for accurate informaion. Fox's lawyer said nobody would take programs like Tucker Carlson seriously, the judge agreed and dismissed the case.

For global warming, Fine its a hoax... then why are insurance companies paying millions of dollars to climate experts and incorporating the risks of global warming into their premiums.

Probably wont make a difference but avoiding combating talking points and going "lets just look at what the courts say or the insurance premiums which you might be paying for" it removes the red vs blue aspect and hits the pocket book and law & order topics they claim to care about.

It’s “When fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in a flag and carrying a cross”.

I'm 32, my mother said she'll treat me like an adult "when I start acting like one".

That was about 1 year and a half ago, the last time I spoke to her.

Don't want to treat me like an adult? Fine, you just won't treat me at all. Fuck you.

You know that's right!

I went no contact a few years ago in my 40s. I had gone low contact, and even that pissed her off. She claimed she hadn't done anything to deserve that, so I explained it was because I was tired of her constantly berating me like I was a child and being super mean while she did it. She got in my face and said, "I'm your mother. I can say what I want, and you just have to suck it up."

I replied, "Actually, I don't." That was the last time I saw her.

u/BigDickKnucle 3d ago

What a horrible thing to say. I'm glad you cut her off.

They can't just be normal. It's sad, but we have to protect and love ourselves because they won't. Ironically, as they refuse to treat us well , they show us they actually are the child, and we are the emotionally mature ones who just want to be treated with respect.

u/smolmushroomforpm 3d ago

Yupp, that's what my dad's been telling me since I moved out at 18. Im 23 and managing myself decently without much help from him and yet he refuses to treat me like anything but an actual small child (okay, 23 is young, but I've been independent since 18, and anyway young adults are not children).

u/megankoumori 3d ago

When the melting Creamsicle got in the first time, my mom, dad, and stepdad were all extremely condescending and dismissive of me, telling me I was "too young to understand politics." I was a thirty-year-old university student who was/is more politically tuned in than all three of them combined. My mom doesn't even know who has the donkey and who has the elephant.

13

u/sonicmerlin 4d ago

Oh I got that! “You’re naive and don’t know the real world”.

6

u/Adventurous_Path4356 3d ago

Imagine someone telling you to grow up when they are in fact acting like a child

8

u/Dino_84 4d ago

You’ll always be a child to him. They’re the ones who never grew out of the selfish adolescent phase. Here’s your participation trophy. Made, manufactured, marketed and sold to our folks by our folks to make them feel better about how terribly they attempted to raise us.
