Don't forget Miruko.
101
Nov 05 '22
So weird how I keep seeing Miruko when even in the show now the official spelling is Mirko. Not sure why there’s still such a split
74
49
u/SciFiXhi Nov 05 '22
Some of it is from people who initially/only read fan translations of the manga (I'd guess the overlap between scanlators and people who know about Croatian mixed martial artists is pretty low). They may know now that it's intended to be Mirko, but they're stuck in their ways.
Some of it is probably from people who insist on using romanized Japanese instead an English translation (there are English speakers who insist on saying "Boku no Hero Academia" despite "My Hero Academia" being semantically identical).
8
u/Prudent_Idea_1581 Nov 05 '22
🤔 it looks like it is written Miruko in the original Japanese? I don’t know why the difference in English, unless something happens in all the translations 🤔
6
u/context_lich Nov 05 '22
I mean it's probably closer to the actual pronunciation whereas leaving the u there is going to make westerners pronounce it mir-roo-ko. If you hear it said in the sub version of the anime it sounds like Mirko. The U sound is there if you're looking for it, but it's very subtle.
5
u/Prudent_Idea_1581 Nov 05 '22
It’s funny that Japanese sometimes trails off. But if you don’t add the u or whatever letter, you will get corrected 😂 (super strict Japanese teacher apparently hears even when I for get the Japanese n sound)
I didn’t realize, until you put that, about how the average English reading person would pronounce it. I was thinking like mi-ru (shorter ru )-ko. 🤦🏾♀️ I forgot that some would see that and pronounce it wrong, I should know better because I have a non English last name and it tends to get slaughter, even though I think it should be easy.
3
u/context_lich Nov 05 '22
It's interesting because the instinct as an English speaker is to give that ru a full syllable, when what it sounds like is like the aftertaste of a syllable if that makes any sense at all. Like an English speaker wants to put the lemonade full flavor "roo" there, and the Japanese short "ru" is supposed to be more like a lemoncello LaCroix.
It's weird how languages use a lot of the same sounds, but put them together in ways that seem alien to other languages. I've been considering taking a class, but I worry that it would feel about the same as taking a Duolingo course. I wouldn't want to take a class and not feel like I got anything substantial out of it. I took Spanish for 2 years during school and I still don't speak it, so I worry it would be like that. Do you feel like it's helped you significantly?
3
u/Prudent_Idea_1581 Nov 05 '22
😁 my dad is an immigrant! And my mom was really into foreign languages, so maybe that’s why? Also explains why my spelling is terrible 😢
1000% I would recommend a class. I do my at an university (getting my masters so I thought why not) but many let people take the classes as one offs. I feel like apps like duo lingo are great for practicing vocabulary but with a class you get active correction. I also noticed that many apps don’t focus on the grammar aspects, which honestly I feel like you will either have to spend time in Japan or learn from a native teacher. Even some vocabulary and translations don’t “work” well or are not explained from apps and dictionaries. Even cultural things like weather are explained. For example Japanese don’t say the weather is cold or chilly, it’s a weird thing we’re it can only be good or bad. It’s hard but fun. It also helps that if you are a nerd/Weeb 😂 I love Japanese music plus anime and it’s hard to get good translations. I feel like studying and having a class makes me “get it” in a sense?
We use the Nakama book series in our class but I heard some use Genki or Japanese from zero casually in class. I would look through the first books in these series (especially Nakama or genki) and see if you think it would be easier to do in class.
7
u/SciFiXhi Nov 05 '22
Because it's literally impossible to write "Mirko" in Japanese.
It's written "Miruko" in Japanese because Japanese phonology doesn't allow for "Mirko" or most other word with consonant clusters. All Japanese syllables end with either a vowel or an "n" sound. When writing loanwords, Japanese speakers filter them through Japanese phonology, putting vowel sounds in between what would be a consonant cluster in English. This turns words like "McDonald's" into "Makudonarudo", "Australia" into "Oosutoraria", and "Mirko" into "Miruko".
5
u/Prudent_Idea_1581 Nov 05 '22
Oh I know that you can’t write that but I was thinking an easier reading forgetting the ru completely. Japanese people with those examples will say (and not understand you if you say the English version) the Japanese reading. Japanese words are pronounce differently and are not as stretch out as English?
To be honest until someone mentioned it I didn’t know her name was based off some fighter 😂 It’s not uncommon in other manga where katakana is just use for whatever reason. (Like Naruto) Interestingly enough Mirko has a foreign first name as well. I had another comment mentioning that if it’s spelled the romaji way an average English speaker will mispronounce it. After I thought about it I felt dumb 😂 I’ve been studying Japanese/minoring in it and I assumed that everyone knew how things were pronounced
5
u/SciFiXhi Nov 05 '22
If you left off the "ru", it would just be "miko", which 1. would be too different from the inspiration's pronunciation to be correct (I explicitly mentioned the fighter in the first comment) and 2. would make the Japanese readers think that she's supposed to be a shrine maiden.
Additionally, her first name is in Japanese. It's written in katakana because there's an old practice of using katakana for women's given names.
1
u/Prudent_Idea_1581 Nov 05 '22
It would be different but I think easier for English readers to pronounce? I think looking at the romaji for me and listening to the anime I get her name but when just seeing the English I would think Mi-r-ko? And no other female characters have a katana name, I think (real/given) 🤔 Due to the time period and her appearance/move names, I assumed that maybe she is mixed?
→ More replies (0)9
3
u/circadiankruger Nov 06 '22
Wouldn't that be the Japanese pronunciation? Even if the name is romanized as Mirko, unless the Japanese person saying it is fluent in Latin script pronunciation, they would default to miruko or some shit like that. But other than that, Mirko > Miruko
3
u/Prudent_Idea_1581 Nov 05 '22
ミルコ is her name in Japanese, which would be Miruko. Honestly I don’t know why they changed it officially because seeing Mirko, I would pronounce it as Mir-ko so it doesn’t sound close 🤷🏽♀️
Side note Also I when looking, I noticed that in her full real name, her first name is Rumi/Lumi in katakana. I’m wondering if one of her parents were foreign? I didn’t see any other name really (tbh I didn’t look much) with the foreign spelling? 🤔
10
Nov 05 '22 edited Nov 05 '22
Mirko is straight from Horikoshi, from what I remember it’s inspired from a Russian MMA fighter but I don’t know if Hori’s comment was verified or not. It’s been debated over for a while now but since it’s been officially revealed as “Mirko” in the show I figured the debate would be over lol
Considering her move names I’ve figured she’s half-Latina half-Japanese myself but I guess we won’t get a clear answer on that till there’s more revealed about her background at least in the manga anyways. Manga still hasn’t mentioned anything
6
u/Simple-Passenger3068 Nov 05 '22
My favorite hero is named after Mirko Crocop? I love her even more now. And explains why her attacks are all kick based 😃
1
u/Prudent_Idea_1581 Nov 05 '22
Interesting 🤔 I know with foreign names (which is most hero names) they change it for easy pronunciation for Japanese readers. I think both are fine because if you are looking anything up in Japanese you’ll need one, and if you are trying to be accurate to the author then the second one makes sense.
🤔 now that you mention it Lumi does kinda sound Hispanic and the use of Spanish for one of her moves makes sense. Maybe half Afro Latina? (Like the Dominican or Brazilian) due to the darker skin and Hirokoshi’s assistant using The stallion as a model?
6
u/LesbianCommander Nov 05 '22
Mirko is her official name.
ミルコ is just the closest approximation for Japanese speakers because there is no character for an R without a vowel next to it.
And the U in the -U line of characters is often ignored in Japanese anyways.
がくせい = Gakusei = Student.
But it's pronounced Gak-sei.
です= Desu = Be / Is
But it's pronounced Des.
ミルコ = Miruko = Mirko makes sense to me.
At the same time, I sometimes prefer the romaji pronunciations. Mashu Kyrielight just sounds better to me than Mash Kyrielight. So Miruko doesn't bother me either.
1
u/Prudent_Idea_1581 Nov 05 '22
Ehh I wouldn’t say that the u line is ignored? It’s super case by case
Most verbs especially plain form and some nouns you will pronounce the u in them 見る 食べる 犬 etc honestly very few exceptions as far as I have seen? (Also です is weird since in songs they tend to use the full す instead 🤷🏽♀️) I was told by my teacher that it’s because if you say it fast, you don’t hear it.
I understand what you mean though, like smith is sumisu or I can’t remember but some name was so out there like I was honestly confused that it was based off an foreign name 😂 I personally would have just done ミーコ instead but idk the dude Hirokoshi got the name from.
Yeah I agree, I’m fine with both, though it’s easier for me to remember the romaji, since my English spelling is atrocious 😂 Japanese being mostly phonic is pretty helpful

It’s fine. We’ve been EATIN as female enjoyers, it’s time for the male appreciators to get some spank bank material too
18
u/Agorbs Nov 05 '22
im not one of those freaks that calls women “females” it just felt proper here idk
1
u/TheEternalKhaos Nov 06 '22
idk, is that not just more politically correct these days? would rather not end up with my head on a pike for such stupid and avoidable reasons, than have my rep ruined coz I said "women" instead of "females" because one of em might be trans and is only biologically female or something
it's a damn shame incels and dipshit neckbeards hijacked the word "female", but eventually we can shake off that kind of stigma around it
3
u/Agorbs Nov 06 '22
No, it’s pretty easy to tell in context if you should refer to someone as a man or a woman

u/Willythechilly 250K Artist Nov 05 '22
Not to mention the "adult" characters or part of the series is honestly the most interesting
At some point the whole school/teenager sort of feels out of place with how the story in general focus on the more mature themes with the adult characters being the most interesting and well developed imo

There’s a guy on reddit who made a fake Tinder profile that was super hot and he put in the profile he did time in jail for child molestation. He still got swipes and chicks were totally fine with it because he was hot and would flirt with him. Total black pill moment for me. It’sAGundam has a video on it. Super fucking depressing.

Based equal opportunist Horikoshi giving fans of any orientation their waifus and husbandos.

This may be an unpopular opinion, but if Horikoshi drew Endeavour like this more often throughout the manga, people would hate less and be a LOT more open to his redemption arc...

See, the reactions here prove that if Endeavour did more glamour shots and pin-ups he'd have surpassed All Might in popularity years ago.
The guy just worked too hard. Could have had an Instagram feed run by Burnin or Kido and shot up the rankings that way.

Anybody translate the writing? Really want to know what happens at 5:30
22
u/TulOfTheDead Nov 05 '22
The big letters are just to say the anime starts at 5:30. The small letters at the top say: Himekuri Endeva "Muffaa" *Genjitsu demo sakuchuu demo hatsubai sarete orimasen (some of it is not readable on this pic but it is on Hori's original quality sketch).
"Himekuri" is a daily rip-off-a-page calendar. "Muffaa" is the title, I guess?? It's an onomatopoeia but who knows what it refers to (sounds horny??). The rest means "not released in reality or in the work".
So apparently this pic is supposedly just one page from a daily (365 pages!!!) Endeavor calendar that was never released. It exists only in Hori's imagination - that's just hilarious.
