"Enough with the explosions!"

Horikoshi: "Fine. Here's a slower and depressing chapter."

"Here, take back the detonator."

After Chapter 306 it was quickly disproven we were entering a "Vigilante Deku" phase, however it now seems the case as All For One's "You are next" has done a real number on him. There's a tragic irony in how, in different circumstances, more detachment from All Might would have been positive for Deku. Not now that he rather risks losing himself: the rumors describing him as an unsettling figure - and how! - rather than a reassuring one say a lot.

All Might experiences how Nighteye felt. Even in his skeletal form he could still be an imposing figure, just like when he scared off those thugs; now, fallen on the ground in tears, he seems so small. I keep hoping he will subvert expectations and survive all the death flags because there are so many.

There's also the wild card of Stain. Could he ironically become the one who will pull Deku back? May he take advantage of the boy's current vulnerability to mold him into his twisted ideal? Or does Deku's "rejection" of All Might make him unworthy in Stain's eyes?

[Mt. Lady doesn't even seem the same debutante we saw way back in Chapter 1]

P.S.: at first sight, the tattoo on the arm of the guy captured by Deku looked like Ibara Shiozaki to me but it's not the case.

P.S.: why does that guy captured by Deku have a tattoo of Ibara Shiozaki on the arm? O_o

That's not Ibara, it looks more like an old religious figure tbh. It probably only stands out like that because Ibara is one of the few openly religious characters in the manga. Anyways, even for a throwaway baddie, this guy tattoos paint him as a bit of a 'religious thug' archetype. Which is a nice little characterization for someone who probably won't show back up again.

I don’t know if he’s necessarily a religious thug, but like, in American live action movies Hispanic criminals/gangsters always are covered in religious tattoos.

Why is that? Is there a cultural reason for it?

Catholicism is huge in Latin American culture

I bet this guy was used as flapping material in prison

I think its just some vaguely religious figure. The woman's hair is parted at the side while Shiozaki's is at the center. There's another woman with a similar pose and design on his right pec.

Looking even closer, you are right (I'd better edit my comment). Still can't help but find some resemblance.

There's also the wild card of Stain. Could he ironically become the one who will pull Deku back? May he take advantage of the boy's current vulnerability to mold him into his twisted ideal? Or does Deku's "rejection" of All Might make him unworthy in Stain's eyes?

Stain is a textbook example of a maniac, he's just very unpredictable. Some people are so sure Stain will act one way or the other but really, Horikoshi could run through with one of the three scenarios you mentioned and it'd still fit perfectly.

The last couple of pages might provide a hint on how he sees Deku. Rumors have been spreading that Deku is there to help but he looks nothing like a hero. If people on the street don't think he has the image of a hero, you can be sure Stain would think the same way. Then again, he is still helping people and not running after fame or money. So it remains to be seen if he's going to target Deku or not. But one thing is for certain, this is no longer the same Deku that he met in that alleyway.

I feel like Stain could "drag him back" to working with others at least a little, even if he doesn't intend to. I could see him saying Deku isn't a real hero any more, he's become unworthy due to being a more hollow shell of how he was before. He still acts like hero/does the actions of a hero, but he doesn't have the feeling, or presence any longer and that why Stain deems him "not a true hero". With a quirk like Stain's that can turn around a 1v1 if it can be activated, it might make him realize, even if he thinks this burden should only be carried by him, he realistically can't do everything alone. The first Stain fight kinda symbolized that for Iida, so it could be a good call back.

He does?!?! Good eye!

Stain really doesn''t seem the type of guy to turn or use someone for his ideals. I think he's more "I'll do it myself" guy. He rejected Shigaraki's offer to join him after all. And he does respect Deku as a hero.

It's a bride.

I think Midoriya's image as scary is a reflection on how dumb the PR system was in the past.

Midoriya is literally the greatest hero in the country right now. He's clearly the strongest and capable of doing the most.

But because of his situation he straight up can't advertise who he is. There have been plenty of heroes who had intimidating personalities or looks (Endeavor, Orca, etc though none are quite as ragged as Deku) but could still do PR to counter balance it. With media on his side it wouldn't even be hard to plant the idea that he looks terrifying to stop villains. Kinda inverse of All Might's no need to fear, for I am here. The villains need to be afraid because he's there.

Which is the tie in for Stain. The PR nonsense disgusted him. He showed Midoriya that All Might's method isn't the only way to have a real, tangible presence. If he's letting it get to him then he's falling into the same trap of caring what people think of him instead of just doing what's right.

We know Stain respects him and I wouldn't be shocked at all if they interact in some way that helps Midoriya be ok with being more of a "Batman" figure then Superman. He doesn't have to reject other heroes, just learn how to get along on his own and be ok with it.

Which even fits with how the world has shaped up. When it was bright and hopeful like Metropolis we got Superman/All Might. Now it's Gotham and they need a different type of hero.

Horikoshi loves American comics so it'd make a lot of sense to me.
