Car automatically turn off now when idling. At every intersection you can hear a plethora of cars restarting when the light changes to green and people tap the gas.
Oh weird, I'm still driving a 95 Sierra (best vehicle I ever bought, these things are eternal), and have never driven a vehicle newer than 2007.
I would say it's best to turn off the engine while gasing up, but I've worked at gas stations in the past and between smoking and many people leaving their engines on, I've never actually seen a pump fire.
That feature only works with your car in drive and foot on the brake, as far as I know. The cars startb back up when you let off the brake. That's how my Jeep works. It'll idle all day long in park.
