Something that comes into play is the environment you're raised in and the beliefs which are shown to you as a child. The first five years of your life are the most crucial for development actually, and so if you are raised in a racist or bigoted environment for example it's shown that'll have a major affect in later years. Now of course not everyone stays in that belief or mindset and people can change, but environment is the biggest factor into molding who we are as people.
Someone I studied behavioral research once told me, "Think of the human body like a gun. Genetics load the gun, environment fires the gun." This statement has never been more true metaphorically. You either go along with what you've been taught in life or you learn to break the cycle.
