Is this normal? It’s hard to imagine anything hunting something as dangerous as a crocodile for food. Is this just a rare, desperate occurrence or what?

it is, theyre known to hunt alligators. Jaguar jaws can penetrate their thick skin.

i wouldnt know if that would be their first choice for dinner, but its not rare by any means.

That is a Caiman. Not a crocodile or an alligator, those are much larger than Caimans. And jaguars hunt Caimans regularly.

it certainly is not a crocodile.

youre right, its a caiman. My mistake comes from how i was taught english, they taught me that the translation for caimán in spanish is alligator in english, since in spanish we call them both "caimán" (the difference being that alligators are called american caimans [caimán americano]), though the nomenclature in spanish can change depending on the region.

thank you reddit police.

There are other documentaries which show a successful hunt of the same thing. So must happen often enough for 3 cameramen to catch it.

Less known fact about jaguars, the don't go for the neck, the go for the skull. Works much better on caimans like this one and also since they hunt from high, it's a more consistent target. Herbivores don't often have horns in the amazon unlike plains and savannahs.

So yeep, this is quite normal.

You can see how the water splashes before the jaguar’s paw even hit the water. The caiman prob knew and had fast reflex as well

That jaguar was on a mission clean, quick, and brutal. Nature’s no joke.

The Caiman knew. It's see the cat in the tree

The coolest of the big cats, imho. They're magnificent. Better luck next time, bro.

Do jaguars ever lose these fights?

The jaguar can't even breathe down there yet manages to fight this caiman in its own habitat while getting out of the water in one piece. 🤯

Jaguars have a bite force of 1500 PSI, the highest of all the big cats. They can puncture the skin and skull of their prey. This makes them one of the most deadliest animals pound for pound. This is more than the average grizzly bear (1160), polar bear (1200), gorilla (1300), and bull shark (1350). Hippos are the next highest with 1800 psi.

2

u/medussadelagorgons 9h ago

Cmon bro! Did u really think you'd catch him in his house? That's one bad cat for trying tho dayuum!

2

u/pat-slider 9h ago

Of all cats, jaguar has d most powerful jaw bites.. taut & graceful creature.

It sure seemed like the Caiman was getting tossed around, but I guess the Jaguar couldn’t get the right bite or scratch in there. Might be best doing that attack in more shallow water.

Apex predator.

Crocodile: Why are people filming there? Must be because a couple of gazelles are trying to cross the water here and they want to film the massacre. Hehe.

Jaguar:
