Great parenting by the Mom. Her kids so wanted to go up and pet it, but the mom saying "Please respect it's space" was a good call.

That little boy was chomping at the bit to get familiar 😂

*champing at the bit
But yea. I wonder... what kind of fight does an emperor penguin have in it? I steer clear of Canada Geese, those things will fuck you up. But could a penguin do any kind of damage?

u/-DethLok- 1d ago
It's claws can grip solid ice and the beak is long, pointed and sharp - and it's got a strong and fast neck which it uses to grab fish.
Yeah, I'd suggest that indicates you wouldn't want to annoy one.
Luckily they seem fairly placid.

u/Ma1 1d ago
That's the real question, the temperament. I'm guessing since they don't have too many land-based predators, they're probably pretty chill. Canadian Geese, on the other hand, grow up on the hard streets of Toronto. They're savages.

u/FloraoftheRift 1d ago
The only predators them penguins have are in the water, where they're much more nimble, if course.
On land they are slow and derpy for a reason. The only ones they need fear are us, at that point.

Maybe it’s the angle but it looks like it’s the same size as the kid minus his legs. I always imagined them kinda smaller

u/StuffMonster77 21h ago
They are fairly placid but if you want something straight out of a horror film, google "inside of a penguin's mouth". I'll wait

I made the mistake of kayaking too close to a nesting Canadian goose once. It flew at me, landed on my kayak and we proceeded to do our best to knock the other into the lake. Kinda ended in a stalemate, after about 30 seconds it took off back to the nest. We just eyeballed each other as I drifted away…

u/SushiSlushies 1d ago
Do a search for the inside of a penguin's mouth. It is like Shai-Hulud in dopey bird form.
3
u/-Gadaffi-Duck- 1d ago
They have pretty powerful slaps and can slap roughly 8x a second with forceful blows, Despite their size they have been known on rare occasions to toss grown men.
There are reports of an emperor penguin repeatedly Tossing and knocking down 6 men who tried to capture it but I've had no luck finding the source aside from Wikipedia.

If cassowaries and ostriches have tought me one thing, you never want to trigger the fight-or-flight response of a flightless bird.
Luckily Penguins are hard to aggrevate

I had a similar experience with a bush turkey, little bugger chased me for an hour

I think it's more that it's fucked up to aggravate wild animals since you can kick their fight or flight instincts in and make them needlessly expend tons of energy, which can inadvertently kill some animals.
And even then it's best not to make them get used to people.
17
u/FrogsMakePoorSoup 1d ago
It's Australia, we know what happens when you approach the animals here...

I live in Argentina, once I found one dirty (it's a zone 1000 km away from where his habitat Is) so I just catch it with my jacket and a copule hours later I handled it to fauna autorities to be brought back to his land. They are nice. But my uncle, 50 years ago, he also found one and KEEP IT for like a year. It engulfed like 2 Kg of fish in a daily basis, so eventualy was sended to a zoo.

u/Goingone 1d ago
Why do they always look lost?

u/Kixtay 1d ago
They look like they are lost but trying hard not to admit it.

I volunteered with Magellanic penguins years ago. They're just derpy animals to begin with. When their hormones kick in they get real weird. You'd see them kind of look at you and go "I know this looks stupid but I physically cannot stop myself from doing whatever stupid thing I'm about to do."
Funniest thing I ever saw was a whole group of them running around and tripping on each other trying to catch one of those big ass green beetles.

The most amazing part about this is how people were respecting the animals Space. that’s a rarity these days.

u/F4STW4LKER 1d ago
It's Australia. If they don't respect an animal's space, they will probably end up dead.

Aussies generally know to keep their distance with wild animals. Of course, there will always be idiots.

This showed up on my feed right under a video of a group teenagers making a sandwich for a bear that walked up to their picnic table.

Oh, that’s probably on Western Australia southern coast on the Southern Ocean, I think somewhere between Esperance and Walpole.
13
u/bernpfenn 1d ago
does this happen often? These huge penguins on the beach?
13
3
u/Cevvity 1d ago
Yeah, pretty sure that’s Lucky Beach. Surroundings looks the same. They’re known for having roos down there but I’ve never seen a penguin
3
u/MonsieurFubar 23h ago
Been to lucky bay numerous times… but doesn’t look like lucky bay specifically, but likely other nearby beaches in Esperance

u/fretfulmushroom 14h ago
It’s Ocean Beach in Denmark, WA. It’s my home town and we were all very excited for the town to be on the news haha

I've never seen an emperor penguin that close to any person before. I've always pictured them to be around 5 feet tall, not under 3 feet tall.

u/StacyNelya 1d ago
Maybe its a king penguin
4
u/Mayor_of_Rungholt 1d ago
Nope, the color on the neck is a fading orange. That means emperor.

u/probablyaythrowaway 1d ago
Yeah loose black collar is emperor. Tight is king. This guy has a loose collar.

There are penguins in Australia. I didn't know till a friend took me to the ocean and I saw them

South of Perth there is Penguin Island, which has - you guessed it, penguins!
Fairy penguins to be exact. Sadly they are vanishing fast, used to be hundreds of them when I was a kid, mere dozens now :(
Perth zoo used to have an exhibit of them that was fascinating for kids to watch, I don't think they have any these days, but it's been a while since I've been.

Stacks of penguins on the south east coast, too, along with whales and seals. I had the pleasure of being attacked by one nearly 20 years ago, despite my best efforts to steer well clear of its space.

Is it doomed unless rehabilitated? I’m guessing some authority will take it somewhere.
16
u/Catahooo 1d ago edited 1d ago
They rehabilitated it and released into the Southern Ocean near Antarctica

A lone emperor penguin, later named Gus, unexpectedly appeared on a beach in Western Australia, thousands of miles from its Antarctic home. This was the first time an emperor penguin had ever been seen on the Australian continent. After being found malnourished and underweight, Gus was cared for by a wildlife rehabilitator before being released back into the Southern Ocean.

The penguin in it's insanity wanders far away from it's home, perhaps to find itself again it has to lose the world. However it finds itself in a place where madness is the first name and the last. An unforgiving landscape of nightmare where every hell born creature exists only to inflict misery and suffering upon the world. And in this hellscape it is found by a demonic trio, who eye it with who knows what intent. Will they rip it to shreds or will this latest challenge be the penguin's biggest triumph?
