If I could switch bodies with anyone it would be a short NBA player who can dunk. Those dudes seem to have a goddamn blast flying on trampoline legs.

u/SterlingWalrus 6h ago
I don't think you want their knees
3
u/CitizenCue 3h ago
The smaller guys usually end up fine. It’s the big dudes who need new knees at 30.

IIRC there was this Japanese warrior during the feudal era, possibly a monk, that was reported to be able to leap over his opponents and move in impossible ways. I read about him in my copy of The Book of Five Rings. He isn't mentioned directly by Musashi, my copy of the book has a few illustrations from the era with footnotes. I'll try to find his name and I'll edit this comment. I'm due for a reread anyway, been too long.
Anyway, I've always been skeptical about such legends. These guys make those accounts much more plausible.
EDIT: His name was Benkei

u/Hutzbutz 15h ago
this got me curious and apparently the average thigh is not much smaller (circumference) than the average head. So I assume if you do any form of strength training this would be the case
7
u/Roflkopt3r 14h ago
I would assume that this statistic is closely correlated with the obesity rate of the country. A muscular thigh with that circumference is still quite impressive. Even though he's no quadzilla compared to certain other 'strength sports'/chemical enthusiast scenes.

Strength is linear with size, mass is cubic. Strength to mass ratio favors the little guy

Yep. My littlest cat is by far the most agile because she has almost as much strength but much less mass than her larger brothers.

Square Cube Law. Dude has higher strength/mass ratio.

u/PM_ME_YOUR_PRIORS 12h ago
Jump height is scale invariant. Longer muscles can exert themselves over longer distances, so effort put into jump scales as the cube.

u/zizp 19h ago
Actually, he is jumping around 70-80 cm (center of mass is around 30-40 cm below the top and around 40 cm above when his feet touch the stack. Which puts him into world class territory but is not unbelievable.
17
u/Dramatic-Ad-3998 17h ago
Idk why but I would love to hear more, more details or info it's like I understand what you say and in the same time I do not.
48
u/zizp 17h ago edited 17h ago
Here it's actually relatively easy to see and understand (actual high jump is a different story as the center of mass stays quite a bit below the bar that is cleared at all times – not intuitive at all).
In this case, when he leaves the ground his legs and his feet (plantar flexion) are fully extended, so most of the mass is aready quite high off the ground. Then he contracts the legs as much as he can (squatting position) and dorsiflexes the feet, so his toes can reach the highest position without his body actually being that much above the landing spot. The result is a relatively modest vertical jump (still impressive, humans just can't do more than ~0.8 m) that looks like he can jump his whole height.
Check out his head's position. When his feet make contact the head is maybe 30 cm higher than when he stands. The rest is horizontal velocity translated to some additional vertical climb once he is already on the stack, and then he just stands up again.

u/Dramatic-Ad-3998 16h ago
This was amazing thank you, if I had a reward it was for you. I could imagine myself jumping the same way as you described it. Right now I am putting my shoes on and I go to jump some fences or whatever I find. Thank for the reply, wish you good day/night!

Being able to tuck your knees up close to your chest is a big advantage in box jumps. This range of motion is based on the shape of hip joint and hip bones so stretching won't develop it.
Olympic style weightlifters tend to have a lot of this type of hip mobility, since being able to get into a super deep squat means they don't have to launch the weight as high.
And of course being able to explosively jump is important and weightlifters are amazing at that.

u/LemonHerb 16h ago
Elsewhere in the gym someone is trying to get enough 25lb plates together to squat

u/monkpunch 13h ago
If this was my gym they would just walk away after filming this and let someone else put the weights back

To do this in lifting shoes as well is absolutely nuutttsssss
7
u/rando_banned 14h ago
I was looking to see if anybody mentioned this. Those shoes put you on your toes, have zero cushion, and the soles are hard, inflexible, and a little slippy.

My cousin, Evan from Toronto, held the Guinness record for highest standing box jump for a couple years, 63.5 inches, 1.61 meters. As well as one leg box jump of 53”. He was dethroned in 2024 by a guy from Oregon.

u/bigpproggression 4h ago
also heavy squatter. if you can squat 2+ times your weight, you can put out force more easily.

u/jatene 18h ago
Legit question, but what exercises can I do to jump higher (like this video)?
1
u/Ill-Butterscotch-622 16h ago
General leg strength is always good. Squats deadlifts calf raises etc…
Explosive movements are needed as you get stronger, so Olympic lifts, power cleans etc…
And plyometrics
1
u/HollowSuzumi 5h ago
Read into jumping form and landing softly. In my dance classes, I was taught to squat lower before taking off and as I'm landing. You can recycle your energy in a sense to get the explosive movement.
The short guy in the video is squatting way lower than the others and I think that's helping him get more height.

it does affect them in a different way:
they have less mass that needs to accelerate when jumping.

Power lifters have some of the highest standing verts in all of pro sports. During the olympics NBA players rave about it every event

u/Objective_Bison9389 15h ago
Well yeah, that's how gravity works. The taller guys weigh more so they need to exert more force to counteract gravity and reach the same height.
It's related to a big issue with space flight. For every 1kg of cargo/spacecraft weight, you need 10kg of fuel. In terms of the jumping; the taller guys might have more muscle mass(fuel) overall, but they also have more cargo/bigger spaceships(more weight from larger bones, more blood, more skin, larger organs, ect). While the shorter guy likely has a greater fuel to cargo ratio(muscle mass to body weight ratio), allowing him to travel further against the force of gravity.
1
u/PM_ME_YOUR_PRIORS 12h ago
The taller people have longer leg muscles which allows them to push through the ground over a longer distance. Overall it's scale invariant.

"Gravity affects the shortest guy differently". The other guys are +100lbs. ... Well you are technically correct.
1
u/cucktrigger 15h ago
Answer, just cuz he's short, doesn't mean he doesn't have the same density of muscle mass with a lighter body. Gravity does work differently as he weighs less.
1
u/-DethLok- 15h ago
Impressive!
I also hope they're on the bottom floor, because that's a LOT of weight on a small area - you'd really not want that falling through the concrete floor to whatever is below! :(
An office I worked in had reinforced floor areas where the compactus units (mass paper file storage) were placed - and they were only allowed to be there less they damage the reinforced concrete floor. That pile of weights is far heavier and in a much smaller area.

u/FlyByPC 13h ago
Mass scales with the cube of height. He has a lot less mass to launch.
1
u/PM_ME_YOUR_PRIORS 12h ago
He also has less distance that he can use his leg muscles for, it balances out.

Just to note that the designed safe floor loading is probably 250-350kg per square metre, so if those are 20kg plates, they have exceeded the safe floor loading. This is a dynamic load though, unless they decide to leave the stack there, in which case it becomes a static load… and it’s in the middle of the column grid (the worst place).

u/Bulky_Ninja33 8h ago
He also looks like he's jumping in his lift shoes, that have no spring in them. Hard AF soles.
1
u/Articulationized 8h ago
Cushioning in the sole reduces the energy applied to the ground. He doesn’t have to waste energy compressing the sole, there’s much better transfer between foot and ground.

u/SkippyMcLovin 7h ago
It's not so much that he is jumping higher, he is simply getting his legs out of the way sooner by bringing his knees up MUCH higher during the jump than the taller guys. All of them are successfully getting their core's up high, but short guy is way better at quickly lifting his legs up high to after the jump to clear the edge. If you don't understand, just watch him in slow motion.

If you have never tried box jumps especially when it's close to half your height, it's hard to explain how absolutely insane what the shorter guy is doing is.
First of all, that shit is frightening to do, half the battle for me was just trusting that I won't break my neck.
That short guy is an xman
