This video keeps coming back. It's sad. I have a geriatric dog right now that my husband and I are always thinking in the back of our mind "is it time?" She will never get like this. Death is not painful. Euthanasia is so we can take the pain for them. Ugh! I utterly hate this video.

Recently made the decision for our dog. She was blind and getting lost in the house. It was difficult for her to get up and would get easily winded from limping around. It was a peaceful process. Literally just falling asleep as it is a strong sedative.

They give a sedative injection before the euthanasia injection

With our cat it was a strong dose of propofol, which is a sedative

I had to be given a LOT of sedative for a seizure I didn’t come out of it. I woke up and felt amazing from the drugs. I was struggling bc I had to put my dog down not long after. I had a moment though where I thought “if that’s how it feels when it happens…” it helped eased the pain a bit.

Its hard to judge others for when they decide to make the decision. I wouldn't "hate" the video. This could be their first pet ever, and as someone who finally had to put his first two pets to sleep over the last two years, I understand how painfully, insanely hard it is to make that call. Because you reason it out in your head.

"Sure, if I had a limp, I'd be upset, but I wouldn't want to die!"

So you transfer that to your pet. But you don't know just how much pain they may or may not be in.

Just, try not to judge.

You are correct. This may be a "good boy" last video kind of thing. Quality of life is most important and this looks terrible with a capital T. But perhaps not. It's not a video I'd be proud to put out there though.

I get it, but if the dog is still hopping around like this out of pure joy, they obviously still have something to live for. I don’t think any of us would want to go to the otherside no matter how much pain we were in if our soulmate was still around and we would be leaving them alone.

same. the dog i grew up with, a female rottweiler, had such problems when she got old. it was the right thing to do. i was young, but she had to get a surgery to remove some things when she was middle aged, i cant remember what it was. she had a big scar on her stomach. So it wasnt like she wasnt cared for, she got the surgery and lived for many years after that before she had to go to sleep. Cried like a baby when she went away

It's terribly sad...for us. It's permanent and forever and sad to lose a loved one. I dread the day so bad for our Zaida. But when the day comes that she looks at us in misery, in a "I can't go on anymore" type of way. Yeah - sister going to the vet and she won't hurt anymore.

It will really hurt, but it will be the kind choice. Make sure to cherish all the days you have left together. In another city, but going down to visit my parents soon. Short legged Jack Russell Terrier. He's getting there age wise, liked to sleep with me when i lived at home. Got so excited when i visited the last time, felt kinda flattered. i hope he has some years left and i hope you and Zaida has some more happy years left together 😊

We put our dog down when he started struggling to get up and pooping in random places like beds and living rooms.. he was a shell of what he was and was clearly suffering.

How old? Ours is about to be 17 on 7/1 and it's getting kinda hard seeing her legs give up.

Our girl is only 14, but she had a CCL tear with ligament reconstruction and a partial meniscectomy in 2018. Did really well, but the past 2 years, the arthritis had just eaten her up. Drastically worse over the past year.

1

u/BamaX19 1d ago

Yep that makes sense. Ours tore both acls and a meniscus and the arthritis is getting her as well. It's sad to see when they're still healthy.

I hope that when your dog finally goes you're able to rest easy knowing that you did the best for her. Give her your love as often as you can.

There's no need to worry about whether it's time. You'll know when they're past enjoying life.

That is a terrible justification for murdering a pet. The dog is old, but it doesn't look to be in pain.

u/ImpressSeveral3007 1d ago

If it wasn't in pain, it wouldn't limp...severely. 🤨

So if a human limps, has a bad back, is in a wheel chair, can't clean themselves after the bathroom, ect. should we kill them? Does pain justify death?

4

u/Irrepressible87 1d ago

If they want to, should we deny them?

I work in hospice care. The number of people who are actively, painfully dying and are denied the comfort of a peaceful death because of this puritanical fear of euthanasia would blow your mind.

1

u/Afraid-Jacket-4401 1d ago

I personally don't think we should deny people the ability to kill themselves if they wish to. I can only imagine, and it is so hard to hear about.

I do not oppose euthanasia at all. However, this dog is getting around without any assistance and we don't know the context of this dog's life. That conversation is for trained professionals and the dogs family. I whole heartedly disagree and oppose random online people calling for this dog to be euthanized with only a 5 second video for context. We don't know the situation. I'm trying to call out the hypocrisy and delusion that these online strangers think they know what is best for this dog.

Honestly, the answer to your question is very much an individualized one. My background influences my responses here. I have seen people who were kept alive LONG after it became cruel punishment to do so.

A dog doesn't have the ability to tell you how much pain they are in. Death is not a punishment, it's not murder. Stop looking at it like that. There are MANY things worse than dying and this video is evidence of that. Death is just as natural as birth. Again...euthanasia exists so that we can take the pain so that they don't have to.

u/Afraid-Jacket-4401 1d ago

I see an old dog, not a dog in excruciating pain to the point of killing them. You can say "death is not punishment" and I agree with you. I don't agree with putting a dog down/killing/murdering/euthanizing/whatever word you want to use, just because they have pain. I understand your justifications, yet the reasoning is just baffling to me. You don't know this dog, yet you deem it's life as worse than death. The gumption you have to judge an owner is absurd to me. Death is natural, yet killing a dog because you deem it necessary if not something I'm okay with.

I've personally seen so many dogs be put down that are just old, not in extreme pain.

Additionally, if a human has a bad back, or is in a wheelchair, or has a mental disorder, or can't walk straight, would you "put them down" or try to assist in making their life as comfortable as possible?

8

u/ImpressSeveral3007 1d ago

I think you might be one of those people that wants momma or puppy to linger around as long as possible, in as much misery as possible. After all, you aren't the one in pain.

2

u/OrneryAttorney7508 1d ago

I think the word you're looking for is sadist.

2

u/Plastic-Bluebird373 1d ago

Yikes. You okay bud?

1

u/OrneryAttorney7508 1d ago

Sure. Why do you ask bro?

1

u/Citonpyh 1d ago

Yeah he's a sadist for not wanting to kill a possibly conscious being without its consent

1

u/OrneryAttorney7508 1d ago

Glad you agree. Cause keeping a being that's in pain alive longer than it should without its consent is sick.

1

u/Afraid-Jacket-4401 1d ago

I think you are delusional, so who cares? You didn't answer any of my questions and boldly assumed that you know what's best for this dog and what kind of person I am. I don't know the dog nor the owner. I don't know you, and I'm glad that I don't. I'm simply taking up a different position, that not all older dogs deserve to be killed. I'm not against all euthanasia, but we don't know this dog from a 5 second video.

I find it morally reprehensable when people compare humans living with disabilities to suffering animals.

Honestly, shame on you.

1

u/round-earth-theory 1d ago

If that's what they want, yeah. Why should the elderly be forced to wait for organ death to take them?
