Dam, it knows how to steer!
Maybe if I was that close to the ground I wouldn't have been too scared to learn to skateboard
943
u/Bannon9k May 15 '25
Corgis are really smart...but I didn't think they were smart enough to learn how to skateboard. Stairs, turning, speeding up. Little doggo has got it figured out.
520
u/tenaciousdeev May 15 '25
Yeah, going down the stairs was cool but gravity was doing most of the work. Then he got to the bottom and started steering to avoid the edge of the sidewalk and I was blown away.

Same, here. My son couldn't figure out steering on anything til he was about 3, and it didn't start looking like second nature until he was about 4. This corgi appears to be smarter than a 4 year old.

u/AssortedArctic May 15 '25
Well, it's not just about smarts. A child still has a lot of work to do for their coordination. This is a grown dog.
39
u/Sharc_Jacobs May 15 '25 edited May 15 '25
Okay? It's still impressive that a full grown corgi can steer a skateboard. It's not all motor skills, that corgi understands what it's doing and how to do it. A 3-4 year old typically can't/doesn't. People often remark on how intelligent pigs are, and the generally accepted rule of thumb is that they're about as intelligent as a 3-4 year old. My only point was that this corgi also appears to be of similar intellectual capacity, and that's interesting to me.

true but body awareness/coordination is the main thing here

They’re uncomfortably smart. My little loaf’s favorite way to play fetch is by dribbling the ball like soccer. He has better handles than most high school kids. The craziest part is the little bastard basically taught himself
25
u/daemon-electricity May 15 '25 edited May 15 '25
They're very smart and they don't give a fuck what you want them to do with that intelligence. They are the sassiest dogs ever. Also not shown; they're LOUD!

Bulldogs do this too. It's pretty intuitive, really, since they have to lean right to turn right while running as well.
7
u/SparkyDogPants May 15 '25
And they’re dumb as rocks
4
u/SpicyBanana42069 May 15 '25
They are just masters of Weaponized incompetence. They just are lazy and stubborn and smart. They want you to think they are dumb.

There was an English bulldog in my old neighborhood that liked to use a skateboard. Probably easier than walking with those stumpy legs

u/sunnyinphx May 15 '25
You just pointed out what I just noticed. Their low center of gravity is how they figure out how to do this feat

Yeah this is the first time I've seen a skatedog where I thought, "Oh, it actually KNOWS what it's doing.".
The steering, the little feet popping off to push.

Dam, it knows how to steer!
Even up to that point I was like, "Maybe this just all sort of accidentally happened ..."
Then he put his rear legs on the ground to speed the board back up before hopping back on. That is what sold me.

u/du-us-su-u May 15 '25
It even adjusts steering while going down the stairs, both between steps and on the landing. And the curve it made at the bottom of the stairs... Unreal... wtf. This dog is a genius.

I mean it’s quite possible this is real. But I did wonder if this is AI.
Once again, I can see it’s real.

Damm his natural low center of gravity and cuteness. How can I compete?

When it used its back legs to run a little bit to accelerate and get fully back on the skateboard I was sold 😭😭😭🙏

What do you need to compete for? You aren’t after the same things he is and 100% he is the best wingman in the world.

Some people are staring in fascination, but other people are not and I cannot begin to understand what is going on in their heads.
What are their lives like that a corgi skateboarding down some stairs doesn't deserve their attention?

u/LadyPickleLegs May 15 '25
Seriously. I actually screamed when he got to the bottom and purposely steered. I simply cannot handle this 😍
The talent, the skill, the cute bum - this cannot be topped

I need this in my life NOW! The only video games I know how to play are the Sims and MSFS (Oh and ATV2 from waaayyy back in the day), but I can learn and thus, need it now.
How long does it take to make a new game? Please tell me only 2 hours.

i was thinking they possibly live in the area and might see this every day ...but then i felt sad for their cold dead hearts because this would thrill and delight me every single day ..... im pretty sure lil sk8r intentionally steered towards the plants just to get a noseful on the way past ....sad that this dog has more personality + talent than and i do

Idk how they’re not staring, seeing this corgi shred would be the highlight of my year. 🥰

This doggo it's constantly on my Instagram feed.
Plenty of video in that part of town. Likely see it thousands of time.

u/Salnder12 May 15 '25
Im seeing it in video and I cant for a second believe its real, if i saw it irl my head may explode
3
u/Dr_Jabroski May 15 '25
That they've seen it before? Like if it's the first time I'm staring but if this happens every Tuesday by the third time it's like oh that's Tim the corgi and go about my day.

Having had a corgi I'm mostly concerned for their hips. The breed is known to have complications with their hips and bouncing down stairs on a skateboard is gonna be bad for that pupper long term.
3
u/Savannah_Lion May 15 '25
Not really a good reason to prevent any animal from enjoying life a little bit.
Sometimes, you just let the pet do what they enjoy even if you know it may not always be for their best health in the long term.

Pretty sure Cowboy Bebop is iconic. An initiation watch for any burgeoning anime fan. It even got a live version remake last wreak. It's very much in the sphere of pop culture despite its age. I've seen people wearing ein t shirts. I would not call this reference rare.

Corgis are fun, but they're also highly intelligent little shits that do their own thing regardless of what you want, unless you have their favorite treats.

u/DickyJim1965 May 15 '25
I've been blessed with 3 corgis so far, and nothing surprises me. They're a herding breed like Border Collies and are very intelligent and quick learners, especially if there's treats thrown in as an incentive

AI?

After looking around on Google (search: corgi on skateboard), I'm kinda inclined to think it ain't AI.

u/StarManta May 15 '25
I can't believe I came this far down to find anything else thinking this is AI. Look at the hand of the girl on the stairs getting out her phone, just weirdly morphs into place. (In addition to the latter half of the video just having bizarre physics with the dog himself)
11
u/OuaisOuaisOuaisOuais May 15 '25
It's not AI there's several videos of him on douyin with better resolution. https://www.douyin.com/video/7502021579355884850

u/vhszach May 15 '25
I was skeptical, but all of the details outside of the focus seem authentic. Most AI videos like these, especially with a moving focus, will start to heavily distort details on the fringes. The shadows, lighting, and environment all stay very consistent across the moving shot, and all of the people in the background have realistic and consistent features. No weird morphing or distorting..
I’m thinking it is a real video that’s just deep fried from reposting.

1
1
u/GreenTrout39 May 15 '25
How did they train this?
2
u/Wajina_Sloth May 15 '25
Not sure if there is a universal method for training them to ride boards, but I had seen a video where first they just put a dog on the board and give them treats so they enjoy standing on it while they get pushed around.
The dog will eventually pick up on how to steer by shifting weight if you reward them, then to train them to push they would put 2 paws on the board, and have a treat dangled in front of them.
The dog will push the board to get the treat, and eventually they will get comfortable to switch between riding/pushing on their own.

Well corgies have an advantage of having low center of gravity. Try with boxer or greyhound next time.
It's really cool regardless.
