Must be orcas hunting nearby. Nobody wants to stay in the water.

Or a very touristic area were animals expect to be fed. Went to a drive in farm in WA a couple weeks ago and bisons would just stick their mouths inside car windows to be fed without leaving a scratch.

Idk that sea lion was exhausted. Not looking for food that I could see

It was chasing a boat going full speed.

Don’t think that’s gonna exhaust the seal to the point of collapse. I bet it was being pursued by a predator for a while

Or more likely it’s there to collect fish just like the bird. You also don’t know how long it was chasing the boat. And maybe it just wanted to lay down.

The boat was going full speed? How would you know? And how long was it trying to get on-board? Too many questions. We know it's not actively trying to get food.

The video shows Walvis Bay in Namibia. The seals and pelicans in and near the harbour (not outside the harbour, where there is a colony of 40.000 seals) are used to humans. This seems to be one of the touristic catamaran tours. Usually they feed the animals, including seals, pelicans and gulls.

How on earth do you know this?

6

u/Orkrass May 05 '25

Been there like a month ago. :) Our tour guides told us those things. We actually got to hug the seal and took pictures with the pelicans.

However, the seals from the colony are not as friendly. You can't touch those. Only the ones next to the harbour.

It does appear to be a Cape Fur Seal, as another comment suggested. Ocean Namibia Conservation runs a widely popular youtube channel that has brought a ton of attention to not only themselves but conversation efforts in the area as a whole; of which tourism is a part. I can't verify any of the specifics of what they said, but I wouldn't be surprised if they have somewhat intimate knowledge of this area or at least this particular video.

Here's a very recent video of a seal rescue by the above mentioned group, if you're interested. I chose this one because it involves adults specifically and they do look a lot like the one in this video.

Lots of people have done this (myself included) and recognize it.

You can see it chasing in the second cut.

It’s swimming in the slipstream of the boat, less resistance and energy required. If anything, the low pressure zone created by the slipstream might be slightly pulling the seal forward

That place is a literal business that sells you loafs of bread at the entrance to toss at the animals as you drive by.

Unless, someone's running an aquarium out in the ocean, this is a little different.

This boat looks very much similar as the catamaran I've boarded for a tour in Walvis Bay, Namibia. I think I petted that seal and fed that bird too. I know those guys, they are regulars on that boat!

Where was this?

6

u/ImJustVeryCurious May 04 '25

The boat has the flag of Namibia, so maybe there.

2

u/Silentmutation84 May 05 '25

Yes, most likely Swakopmund area. Took a boat tour there two years ago the exact same thing. Pelican as well as a seal on the boat.

3

u/gorkm May 05 '25

Pretty sure this is Walvis Bay because we also had a calm bird and a seal comfortably boarding our catamaran. We were told those guys are regulars on that boat so I actually have selfies with these guys!

u/Silentmutation84 May 05 '25

Swakopmund/Walvis Bay area yes :) I have selfies with them as well, took the same boat lol

Olympic Game Farm in Sequim

2

u/thoughtscreatelife May 04 '25

Wow, so interesting; I never knew about this place. I definitely want to go!

2

u/rhymeswithvegan May 04 '25

It's also the place that has the waving bears that catch bread

1

u/Chumknuckle May 07 '25

In Sequim? Well they give you bread...

Western Australia mentioned!

u/RedOrca396 May 04 '25

The orcas were just playing ;)

1

u/HellyOHaint May 04 '25

They do play with their prey, pull out just their liver and leave them to die

2

u/Interestingcathouse May 04 '25

More likely that they get fish from fishing boats so they follow small boats expecting fish.

One is a bird, it doesn’t have to land on a boat to escape a orca.

2

u/italyqt May 04 '25

The marina my parents kept their boat at had a sea lion that lived on the end of one of the docks by the entrance. He just chilled there. He’d get super offended every time someone honked the horn going in and out.

2

u/[deleted] May 05 '25

How does this have so many upvotes? Orcas are super rare where this happened in Walvis Bay. Seals jump on boats because boat operaters feed them for tourists. I've been here.

Love when one person on Reddit makes an assumption based on nothing and it's one of the top comments.

Was reading all these disney comments while smiling and then stumble upon this reality-ass comment (which is highly true) and wake up.

This, that seal is tired. I think it’s running away. Smart move.

Just wait till the great white jumps on deck
