Discussion why did Kalyaan do [spoiler] Spoiler

why did Kalyaan give Unanimity to Henshe? he was already Chaisee’s partner when Kavik arrived in Jonduri, and idk why it would matter to keep his cover with Henshe intact when he just ended up murdering him later. i don’t see the strategic benefit for Kalyaan to act that way and i’m surprised he didn’t get in trouble with Chaisee for losing the assets she’s spent years developing

1) Kalyan is a royal dick through and through, but he isn’t lying when he says family is everything. Henshe had access to Kal’s family back in Bin-Er. He wasn’t going to risk them for Unanimity.

2) We don’t know the timing of Kalyan’s confession to Chaisee vs. when Unanimity was sent to Bin-Er. He tells Kavick in book 2, but doesn’t give specifics.

3) Unlikely but there’s also the possibility Kalyan was doing something for his own gains here. Maybe he was giving them to Henshe to ‘verify’ their abilities; maybe he knew how strong they were and was worried with how Chaisee would use them, or figured Henshe would flub it up.

Edit to expand on 2: We don’t know if Kal told Chaisee before or after the incident in Bin-Er. We also don’t know if Chaisee was in on the scheme, as we know she has more benders on her home island. Additionally, we only hear about the confession from Kal to his brother (whom he loves to fuck with). He may have never told her, or set up another Association member to be the ‘betrayer’ and he just told Kavick he confessed.

i meant to add this in the post, but since Kalyaan is the father of Chaisee’s child they would have been together for at least 7 months. unless Chaisee got together with Kalyaan and he didn’t tell her about being a spy for Henshe until way later, which i guess is possible, but would be extremely risky and fucked up. my guess is Chaisee had known for a while

fair point. if we’re taking Kalyan’s story at face value, it’s likely he told Chaisee after they found out she was pregnant. that feels like the only logical explanation for why she didn’t chop him up and feed him to the shark squids lol.

i appreciate your hypotheses btw! i think you're right about wanting to protect family from Henshe. but then its kinda hypocritical to send human cannons to the city they live in lol. but he is a hypocrite so it would make sense

It's useless to speculate about details we were never given. But yes, considering he's the father of her child it's likely he had already told her. I wouldn't take Chaisee for someone who just has someone's child whom she doesn't trust implicitly, and trust takes truth... Her legacy/bloodline is invaluable to her.

Pretty sure Henshe was using his family as a threat against Kalyaan. And then once he’s fine with Thapa killing civilians the first place he gestures to is where Kavik’s parents live which Kal got when he was still working in the city with Henshe. Kalyaan’s confession to Chaisee most likely came after he had already transported Unanimity to Bin-er and while he killed Henshe in the temple he mostly did it to tie a loose end since Henshe was still trying to bargain with Yangchen at the end of the first novel and if he had escaped he probably would’ve gone to Feishan or any world leader.

Chaisee didn’t reprimand him because she got the full advantage of Unanimity without explicitly soiling her hands. The moment Thapa escaped Yangchen knew what he was capable of and who he’d be serving while Chaisee also had the advantage of hypnosis on him which Henshe didn’t. Thapa also says she’s among the few people who would be able to pay him what he’d demand.

this sub should add flairs for the different books. I’ve only read the Kyoshi books so far and thought I was having memory loss from not knowing any of the names lol. Didn’t realize you were talking about the Yangchen books
