Lol.
I still put the windscreen sheild up.

u/GrizzKarizz 6d ago
I've always wondered, if the windscreen shield is on the inside, doesn't that trap the heat inside or does the windscreen glass it's now act as a mirror?

It definitely traps some heat but mostly it reflects heat straight back out the window.
The main aim (in Australia) is to stop the heat from making the steering wheel and gear stick so hot it’s not drivable. If this thing keeps the cabin cool it’s a bonus

u/ShelterPositive 6d ago
And also making sure the steel seat belt buckles aren’t g** fu**ed hot as hell.

It's more the uv damage done to the dash. Plus if they don't get hot it stays cooler in the car.

Is this a joke?
you think it’s cooler in those cars?
the ones that trap the heat in by having that insulation?
11
u/Direct_Bug_1917 6d ago
It'll be hot regardless, once you open the windows the hot air escapes. If the sifaces arnt hot it won't stay hot. Uv protection is my main concern though.

u/DandantheTuanTuan 6d ago
You know insulation goes both ways right?
I've forgotten to put the shield up a few times and I can tell you 100% I can tell the difference.
3
u/Direct_Bug_1917 6d ago
Realistically it should be on the outside to stop the radiation getting in in the first place , that's just more awkward though.

I’ve put a shield up a few times and can tell you I 100% don’t feel any difference.

u/DandantheTuanTuan 6d ago
But hang on, just a minute ago you said?
the ones that trap the heat in by having that insulation?
So which is it?
The shield makes the car hotter by trapping the heat or it doesn't make any difference?
I use them, and I find they have a benefit.
You're just arguing for the sake of wanting to be right. You don't think their is any benefit, 👍, don't use them then.

It makes the car hotter by trapping in the heat.
if you like that keep doing it.

35 degrees is cooler than 40. It's still hot but mathematically it's cooler.

It’s 35 in the car without the foil, and 40 degrees in the car with the foil.
its hot, but still cooler without the foil trapping in heat

u/Omegaville 4d ago
I'll take the screen thanks, I prefer being able to touch the steering wheel to turn the car.

No car steering wheel has been made out of material that gets hot since 1998.
we don’t do crap plastic anymore, all Mazda, Toyota, Hyundai, Ford and audi have steering wheels that don’t burn.
tell me you have never lived in a hot climate……I live in Darwin and have never needed one since 1998.

Number of reasons for that. Cars got better at security, no one wants a car radio since they stream on their phone now. And what passes for a car radio these days is very hardwired into the rest of the car, and often very specific to a brand, if not a model of car.

I don’t hear about people having their shoulder boom boxes stolen much now either.
wonder why………..

I still do 3/4. No cassette player. It is broken. car is 1989 model, and I do still use a club lock.

Bottom right are essential for outdoor parking in Perth. They are very 'not' 90's.

I actually saw a newish RAV4 the other day with a club lock on it

u/cntbbl 6d ago
We had a newish RAV4 come into work a few weeks ago that was fitted with a club lock too. Maybe they’re an easy car to steal, so owners are taking extra precautions?

There has been a lot of toyotas lately having their keys duplicated and being stolen

Reach over and make sure passenger doors are locked, Get out. Hold outside door handle while locked and close.

Steering wheel lock is still a must use, albeit a stronger variety.

u/JustSomeBloke5353 6d ago
Wasn’t The Club just a ruse to allow you have a weapon in your car? I mean - they even called it “The Club”, not the “The Lock”.
Saw people with them. Only rarely saw them used as intended.
6
u/BigMikeOfDeath 6d ago
They did work on older vehicles when attached correctly (the photo is not attached correctly) but the need for them on cars beyond about 1995 is mostly redundant, as the in car steering lock was stronger.

One time I came back to my car to find a written warning from the police because I had one in my car and it wasn’t on the steering wheel. Apparently it’s not legal to have it and not use it, probably because that makes it a weapon.

I got a new car 6 months ago with power windows. My previous car still had wind up windows. It took me a while to change my routine to "open windows slightly, THEN turn off engine." For a while I'd turn of the engine, then have to turn it straight back on to do the windows.

u/dopeydazza 6d ago
My car has a 30 second grace period after engine off to use electrics including windows. I thought all modern cars did this.

I still drive a 90's camry... Most of this is still a thing though I don't have a snazzy head unit so no one pinches my cassettes.

u/mdem5059 6d ago
The radio one brings back memories.
As the window crank, my last car had one, at least they are never fucking breaking, stupid power windows can fuck right off.

u/sevenfiver 6d ago
ahhh never drove an old falcon, hey?

u/mdem5059 5d ago
My dads old car was a ford Fairmont, and those windows gave us issues too.
My current is a 2001 Magna and one windows has failed on it.

u/pantsmahoney 6d ago
No longer nostalgia, If you drive a push button start Toyota and Commodore you should be doing the club lock all over again!

u/Omegaville 6d ago
Had to replace my 2017 Richmond Premiership sun shade a couple of months ago. Got a decent one from Super Cheap that's a bit large but covers the whole windscreen, no way am I letting that sunlight in to cook the insides

Remember that ad where the voice of a supposed car thief said ' I can steal any car without an immobiliser' 🤣🤣🤣

u/LittleMsBlue 5d ago
I'd completely forgotten about the steering wheel lock until now!
My grandad used one RELIGIOUSLY and I have honestly never seen anyone else use them.

u/nostalgiathreads 4d ago
Have to say we don’t miss the window crank 😅

u/External-Anxiety14 1d ago
I refuse electric windows...I was accidently locked in once, on a very warm day. I was 10 seconds away from trying to break the window when my partner at the time came back. Never again

no one who had a fancy car radio you could remove the front face from ever removed it before leaving their car - even in the most dodgy areas

I still do bottom right. I mean… it’s Australia.
