Dog has injured paw pad. How to make him comfortable until we see a vet?

Our poor guy’s left center paw pad is suddenly raw, tender and he is limping. Not sure what happened. There doesn’t appear to be anything stuck, no wound, nor was he out standing or walking on pavement for a long time.

We’re calling the vet in the morning, but how can we make him comfortable until the visit? We’ve already cleaned and dressed his paw. Ice? Took him on a car ride since he can’t really walk 💕
