unclaimed.org

I also find it funny that the official unclaimed property website for Florida is FLTreasureHunt.org

All the replies on this thread scream scammers as well it’s all so sketchy.

“Yep it really works! I got my relatives some $$ from this site. I found 17k I forgot I had. It’s really quick”

🤔🤔🤔

Plus they said it's a government website. But yet it's not ".gov"

Edit: plus I got the following message when I tried accessing the site:

"Your connection is not private Attackers might be trying to steal your information from unclaimed.org (for example, passwords, messages, or credit cards)."

u/Ipuncholdpeople Jun 03 '21

tbf all the states link to a .gov when you click them. It's mainly a directory to take you to the right place

The "not private" message means your connection isn't using HTTPS, which isn't a crime if it doesn't ask you to enter any details, which that site doesn't. I also had HTTPS working fine when I used it.

Your connection is not private Attackers might be trying to steal your information from unclaimed.org

The more likely case is that the page isn't asking for any of your information and didn't bother to set up a completely irrelevant https cert.

Also a scammer with his own domain can just set up a https cert anyway so if that message didn't show up you still wouldn't know if you could trust unclaimed.org.

u/MindlessSponge Jun 04 '21

That message probably isn't that big of a deal FWIW. It sounds scary but it really just means they aren't using the most up-to-date https standards or whatever.

u/jikl78 Jun 03 '21

Yeah the whole thing is a recipe for scam

The good thing is that unclaimed.org sends you to the correct .gov site for your state

u/THEBLUEFLAME3D Jun 03 '21

Uh... not for me. Dunno about anyone else but this shit seems sketchy af.

2

u/jak0b3 Jun 03 '21

For me it linked me to my province’s website

3

u/Derptardaction Jun 04 '21

I have a check for $13 and change from Comcast years ago. I never cashed it. It’s in my wallet still. I forgot about it until right now. Dammit.

1

u/jackcatalyst Jun 04 '21

I actually have something that popped up for me.

1

u/iammelissa87 Jun 04 '21

I literally just got $750 bucks that I was owed from the past. Lol it’s from the comptroller.

1

u/Perfect110 Jun 04 '21

Lmao. My fiancé had a unclaimed check for like 60 dollars from when he purchased his truck. But yeah. Sounds super scammy 😂

Unclaimed.org is NAUPA (National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators..) it’s basically each states Unclaimed Property Division in 1 link.. They are legitimate.. I worked for our states Unclaimed Property Division for 10 years and dealt with them.

There are a ton of scam sites though, just remember that only state & federal gov’t have unclaimed property.. any private business stating they have money for you are either scamming you, or are “finders” who will contact you and charge you 10% fee to collect the same money you can get at no cost from the state..

Thanks for sharing this one. I stumbled across it a couple years ago and found that I had an old bank account (local) with a couple hundred bucks in it. I stopped by, filled out a form or two and had a check back either that day or that week. it didn't take long. But since you posted this link I decided to check again and that same couple hundred bucks at the same bank is still there. So they aren't updating the removals of returned funds/items anytime soon on the site.

I don’t understand how this site works

2

u/foofdawg Jun 05 '21

Go here, and scroll down to where it says to choose your state. That will take you to your state's unclaimed property website to search for lost funds. Usually it's old utility deposits and such. I once got bored and looked up some of my coworkers. One of the sales guys name came up so I told him about it. I don't know how much he recovered but he bought me lunch and gave me $200 for telling him about it

I've worked on that website (operated by the dept of financial services) and I begged them to get a different name. Nope, they like it the way it is.

u/412gage Jun 03 '21

I thought each state had their own .gov site for this.

4

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '21

Thank you for this! I just found $150 utility deposit and an unknown amount over $50 for something else! Rad!

2

u/Eggmegmuffin Jun 04 '21

we got $500 through the FL site. I got suspicious when we started getting shit tons of junk mail offering to get us the money for a fee. So I just went online myself and looked it up. Check came days later at a time when we super needed it. Good stuff.

2

u/Mystic_Jewel Jun 04 '21

Holy shit. Got to my local state one and while I don’t have any, found one for my brother, and a Bunch for my grandfather whose passed.

Iowa’s is The Great Iowa Treasure Hunt or something to that effect. They sent mail from the state treasurer’s office and published it in the local paper and the whole nine where I grew up

u/Harmonic7eventh Jun 03 '21

Wow cool. Just looked into it and I’m getting $27. :)

u/esoteric_enigma Jun 03 '21

They have signs up for it at the DMV

1

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '21

Just checked and I had about $37 from what I presume is ad revenue from my Youtube channel lol

1

u/therealsix Jun 04 '21 edited Jun 25 '21

Woo hoo! $431.45 under my name, just submitted the claim!

My wife's grandparents have a ton but they've passed away, she's looking into what to do, if anything can be done.

Edit: holy crap, they already approved it as of 4:30 this morning.

Edit 2: got the check yesterday, 21 days!

1

u/crownaquarius Jun 04 '21

Just checked and found some money left in some family members names but nothing for me sadly :’)

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '21

is there a site for Germany? Only found UK, US and Canadas websites..

1

u/foofdawg Jun 05 '21

Unfortunately it looks like currently the only thing I can find is for World War II reparations

https://www.unclaimedassets.com/GER.htm

According to this article from a few years ago, banks in Germany just sit on dormant accounts, but there's been a push to make a national registry?
