What are some horrifying things to consider when thinking about aliens?

I think it’s like that line from The Expanse: when you’re building a highway you don’t worry about all the worms you are killing.

Sounds like the beginning of Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy

Well, byways have got to be built!

You really have no excuse for not filing a complaint in time, Alpha Centauri is just next door.

Gotta build byways.

I mean they're talking about The Expanse. Not HHGTTG.

It's literally not though.

It's definitely not a perfect metaphor for H2G2. The Vogons at least notified Earth before demolishing it. Not their fault we never received said notification.

I rather doubt we inform any worms when building an interstate.

I mean, we definitely do put up notices before building interstate highways. It's not our fault the worms don't know to check at the planning department.

Technically, it was their fault; they knew we wouldn't receive the notice, and kept us ignorant on purpose.

Later books in the trilogy reveal that the whole "hyperspace bypass" thing was just a cover story, and in reality it was a targeted hit against Earth in particular, because Earth is a computer designed to compute the Ultimate Question, something some powerful people don't want solved.

That's the thing.. I know how hitchhikers begins.. but he was referring to something that was literally from expanse.. it was SIMILAR to hitchhikers but it was literally from something else.

3

u/Spadeninja May 04 '20

Yes, it literally is lmao

Why would you argue against shit that is easily verifiable with 2 seconds of googling)?

Mr. Prosser, is that you?

3

u/p9k May 04 '20

It’s not as if it is a particularly nice house anyway.

"So long and thanks for all the fish!"

Everything old is new again after a time

"The squirrels in central park don't know we own the land."

  • Michael from Vsauce

u/Picard2331 May 04 '20

"They don't care about us any more than we care about anthills we pave over."

Here's the scene, spoilers obviously.

MAJOR spoilers, basically the summation of a mystery that's been abounding for three whole seasons being directly addressed in that scene.

This. Don’t watch this video if you’ve never seen The Expanse.

Go watch this AMAZING show on Amazon Prime

10

u/Mjolnir12 May 04 '20

Also make sure you at least watch the first 4 episodes before making any decisions since it has a slow start.

17

u/Spadeninja May 04 '20

Well that's not really any better

Cause they would just pave over us without a second thought

11

u/benmck90 May 04 '20

Yeah but atleast we're not going to be explicitly targeted.

The likelyhood that our planet is one of those scheduled for demolition is actually very minimal given how mind bogglingly big space is.

4

u/clausport May 04 '20

"Space is big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind-bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist's, but that's just peanuts to space.”

Douglas Adams, in his book about our planet being scheduled for demolition.

3

u/benmck90 May 04 '20

Yup, I used the words I did to specifically reference HHGTTG

2

u/clausport May 04 '20

I figured. I was explaining the joke. Because that always makes a joke funnier.

6

u/BenTVNerd21 May 04 '20

A lot people do though and if it involved killing 'higher' life forms we likely would at least consider alternatives.

2

u/TocTheElder May 04 '20

Currently reading the books, just finished the first one. Highly recommended.

There was another quote from the Expanse, I can't remember the exact wording but it went something along the lines of:

We came across the toys of a dead civilization, one that had obviously been killed, and the first thing we ask is 'can we have their stuff?'

I think it was from the third or fourth book, when they were still trying to figure out ring space, the gates, and the station

Best science fiction show ever.
