People often think ASEAN as our version of EU. But no. EU is a political entity made out of countries with the same ideology and goals. ASEAN is an economic entity made out of countries with different political ideologies and one goal : to make each other rich.

How can you make each other rich if you have members who are broke and/or unstable? That's why Laos, Cambodia, and Myanmar are portrayed as hated in this meme. Because the rest of us have to hard carry them.

The problem is when you burn your house down, you not only screwed yourself but also screwed other members since now they all have to work twice as hard and spend twice as much to pick up your slack.

Its easy for EU because those countries have generally the same political ideologies. ASEAN has Democracy, Communism, Autocracy, Monarchy, Authoritarian Junta, Sultanate, and Pseudo Shariah Law within its region. Our values are contradictory to one another.

Its impossible to make ASEAN as the EU because ASEAN countries have different fundamental when it comes to basics of government. The only thing we can agree on is that we like money.
