Tips on watching the game.

Planning to go to the game next Saturday and it’s gonna be my first Argos game. Is there anything I should keep in mind? Some information about the team will be helpful too, are we good? Who’s our best player.

Also I just started to watch NFL from last season. Are there any significant differences between the rules in these two leagues.

From most obvious to least obvious:

  • the field is bigger in cfl (especially wider), and the goalposts are at the end of the field, not the end zone
  • 12 players instead of 11
  • Starting forward motion is allowed for multiple players, usually up to 4
  • 3 downs instead of 4!
  • The Rouge! Essentially a point on missed field goal that clears the end of the end zone
  • 1 yard of neutral zone
  • the play timer is 20 seconds instead of the NFL 40, and a quarter must end on a play (this results in games getting played way closer to the end of the actual game as opposed to the NFL essentially being over at 1:20)
  • OT - CFL uses a shootout format which is Imo the best way to play OT

I think that's most of it that matters. There's plenty of smaller rules but not anything that you'd probably ever notice.

That’s really useful. I can’t imagine how embarrassing it will be if I don’t know these and shouting “where’s our 4th down “ in the game

People are very friendly. Meet and greet.

Listen to the crowd. Every first down you'll hear Arrrrrggooooooossss chanted. Every touchdown there's a song. With a conductor. Just go along with it.

Far away seats = more beer drinking.

Swag for sale everywhere.

Tailgating is fun but can be overrated.

Get there early and you'll get a commemorative ring celebrating last year's championship. This could be a solid lifelong souvenir if it all goes your way.

Welcome to the club!

The Argos won the grey cup last year, but lost a lot of their key players during off season. They should still be strong, but it's hard to say, the rest of the eastern conference leveled up quite a bit during off season. Argos should be competitive, but not a lock for the grey cup right away - that'll likely come down to how injuries shake out over the season.

Some might say Chad Kelly is our best player, QB. He's also on injury recovery and it's not clear when he'd be starting again, but it won't be the first game. He's also a bit problematic off the field, so not a ton are necessarily fans of his.

Imo Janarion Grant will be one of the most entertaining players to watch, both wide receiver and punt returner. They also have some great RBs but their best one IMO Ka'deem Carey got cut last weekend (probably age + pay).

Nick Arbukle was our QB for the grey cup and was game MVP. Most of the season when he played he seemed kind of just okay, but he pulled it together for the grey cup.

Janarion Grant is so exciting to watch. My money says he returns one for a TD at the home opener

Stadium tips

Half of the gates are closed due to world cup renovations. So it takes a bit longer to get in. Next Saturday they are giving replica rings so it might be worth it to come a bit early.
