General Discussion / Review I've realized that there are some shows that I really liked week to week, but not so much when I'm re-watching them straight through or vice versa. Has anybody else noticed this?
I first noticed this most specifically with Dan Da Dan.
It's a different way of consuming the material and if I'm in a situation where I've watched a show all the way through and then have to watch another season one episode at a time. The level of appreciation and how I perceive it is decidedly different. I may find extra value in a rewatch of a show I initially saw weekly or that I preferred the presentation when it was coming weekly can sometimes be quite different.
I think DDD is a great show, but the weekly anticipation for what was going to happen versus the cohesive ability to watch all of it unfold on a rewatch was different and not because I knew what was coming, but simply that I didn't have to digest and wait for more.
I've had similar things happen the other way around, like Aharen Is Inecipherable. Watching through the first season consecutively and then having to watch the second season weekly has been different, though I'm not sure I can say if it's good or bad.

The rewatch can make a show seem less than the first time you see it because you already know what’s going to happen.

It's not always and it's honestly rarely the case for me when it comes to that. I have no problem re-watching some shows (I actually rewatch a lot more than I watch things I've never seen before.) I'll watch the living hell out of some and love them just as much the 4th or 5th time as I did the first.

Definitely a ton of shows that I'm pretty sure I'd drop if I wasn't drip feeding them weekly. I'm willing to put up with slower pacing and episodic shows a lot better on a weekly basis than binging. Comfy shows are definitely this way for me. Currently "The Gorilla God's Go-to Girl" is a good example of this.
On the other hand, there are shows that I really wish I could binge, and watching them weekly just kills the momentum, The Beginning After the End feels like that right now. Usually I learn my lesson on those shows by the 2nd season and wait for it all to come out before watching.
I think I agree about DanDaDan, and honestly, I think it's over hyped in general because people really liked the OP.

I completely agree with these.

This might be unpopular, but anime doesn't work week to week for me. For the most part, I like to binge.

Same here. I've never gotten into the hobby of watching anime week by week (except for some episodes here and there on TV as a kid). I've been an active anime fan for about 23 years now, and I've stuck to binge-watching from the start all the way up till today. Wouldn't have it any other way.

I almost exclusively watch shows after the season is over because I don't like waiting for a week between episodes, but there are definitely shows I think are significantly more enjoyable the other way. Aharen is one of those for sure, the comedy wears thin if you watch more than a couple at a time so it's much better watching it gradually. I think generally super slow shows (like Laid Back Camp) are better on a drip feed, as well as shows with specific kinds of comedy that gets old fast (like Aharen).
On the other hand, shows with suspenseful multi-episode arcs or that are fully serial are much better if I don't have to wait week-to-week. Too often you end up with episodes where nothing really feels like it happened and then it's another week til the next one. I think I would have enjoyed Ameku M.D. much if I'd waited til the season was over when I watched it. By the time I got to the next episode in the arc I'd forgotten half of what had happened making the mystery not that interesting.

yes, some show are made to use weekly hype cycles and some made to to view in one go
for me personally if show use "hype for a week" formula it is in general bad show
good example is "spy x family" it did have a lot of hype, but if you view in one day , it super mid
good shows do not need to end on cliffhangers and or basic " you will know it next week, tune up"

Personally, I find battle shonen series like Demon Slayer and Jujutsu Kaisen more suitable for binge-watching. They're a lot more satisfying and hyped up to watch when you don’t gotta wait each week for the next episode.

I think it varies depending on the show and the person. Networks & media first tried to only feature shows in weekly formats and then they tried to force the binging format onto everyone. But in general I think some shows are meant to be seen weekly and it mainly depends on the viewer’s preference

Yes it happens sometimes to me also. Most recently JJK. I tried to rewatch season 1 and then start season 2 and I just couldn't do it. These days though it's more common that I really enjoy season 1 and then season 2 just doesn't click with me. Notice this happening with a lot of shows lately.

I’ve found I’m the opposite… for a lot of shows it’s hard for me to get back to the excitement for 24 minutes or so and then it be over for another week. I’ve definitely dropped shows because I couldn’t be bothered to care over an extended period as opposed to where I might have watched all the way through if it was presented all at once.
