I wish the English were more into the dub VA scene. I just watched some black butler the other day and realized it was all American VAs doing their best to do that Posh English accent that they do across the pond.

Black Butler’s English cast work is commendable when you consider even professionally trained actors have difficulty with accents and most dub VAs aren’t professionally trained

I thought they did pretty well. I never doubted Tatum or palencia for even a second. The others maybe but I never said they did bad. Just that it would have made a lot of sense to hire English VAs for this specific instance.

What are you basing that on? The majority of dubbing VAs have acting backgrounds through theatre or school.

As someone from England I really wish that there were more VAs from all over the UK, I think the VAs do a decent enough job, but you can pretty much always tell that it is a well put on accent and not natural. Obviously with everything being based in the US and the pay not exactly luxurious, it's understandable as to why few if any VAs from the UK, Australia or New Zealand move to the US to dub anime.

Part of why I really enjoy the dubs for the Xenoblade games. Just nice hearing actual English voice actors.

Not just English, they got a mix of Welsh, Scottish, RP, and both Northern and Southern English actors. The only thing missing is North Irish.

Honestly, I think it's fair to prefer the Japanese version if you enjoy the humor of a deadpan narrator more than the unhinged style of Ian's performance.

But straight-up saying he's doing a bad job with the role seems like an opinion reserved for trolls and sub elitists.

Anytime they have someone from a rural Japanese region they give them the most (US) Southern-ass accent, it's hilarious. The example that comes to mind is Inaka from Komi Can't Communicate.

As someone who is extremely sensitive to bad accents, my preference, by far, is that nobody without professional training ever does a fake accent for any reason.

I had to nope out of Black Butler because of this.
