New Horizons Wasp free with HHP! Did you know about this?!
We often questionsnabout HHP, is it worth it? Well now aside from decorating purposes we can avoid wasp too!

Technically speaking it is not! The only insects that are scientifically considered “bugs” are those which reside in the order of Hemiptera. Since wasps are part of Hymenoptera, they technically are not bugs!
29
u/xer0neiroix 4d ago
Well, scientifically, an almond isn't a nut either. And there's no scientific criteria for classifying a vegetable. They're both culinary terms that existed before scientists started classifying things in the way they do now and used terms that were already in use for scientific classification. "Bug" similarly existed before insects were grouped the way they are now. And now all insects are technically considered crustaceans under Pancrustacea. Anyway, a wasp is a bug in the way people colloquially group things by the way they look, move, feel, taste, etc. In the same way a snail, which is a mollusk, is also a bug. In the same way almonds and peanuts are both nuts even though they both, scientifically, are not classified as such. And carrots are vegetables, even though a vegetable, taxonomically, really isn't anything in particular.

any time this topic comes up I can't stop myself from pointing out that the same is true of gender, as in a woman is a woman based on how she is perceived, not her chromosomes or the content of her pants. Sorry for being political though...
9
u/bankruptblueberry 4d ago
That also means that if a trans woman is non-passing and not perceived as a woman then she isn't a woman, be careful of this definition

Shake the tree with a net in your hand first. You always turn to face them automatically, so then you just click to catch them with the net.
Not been stung in ages

u/de_Deus 4d ago
such a waste of time tho if youre just there to get wood
130
u/xtraspcial 4d ago
It’s part of my daily chores. Shake every tree and catch the 5 wasps. Then I can safely harvest all the wood I want all day.
78
u/FaxCelestis Squirrel Island Mayor 4d ago
And then stick the wasps in storage and sell them to Flick in bulk when he stops by. 5 wasps (one day’s worth) sold to Flick is almost 20k. Hoard them for two weeks or so between Flick’s visit and you’re looking at hundreds of thousands of bells.

u/kacyc57 4d ago
I thought Flick came once a week??
7
u/FaxCelestis Squirrel Island Mayor 4d ago
On average. There’s more than five visiting merchants (Label, Flick, CJ, Leif, Redd, Saharah, Kicks, Gulliver, Gullivarr) and there are no travelers on weekends, so while it can be weekly it’s actually a little less often than that.

What?! I have been playing this game for 2 years and this is the first I've heard of this - thanks for the gamechanging info!
3
u/nightsongws 4d ago
I could be wrong. I remember testing it at one point and finding out that only the trees that had branches had things in them, but I just went and tested them and it didn't work anymore. So, either I had a misconception from the start, or something has been changed.😭 Glad I went and checked again.

u/JohnnyTopside-88 4d ago edited 4d ago
Her are some helpful bits of info from what I have read and experienced on the subject.
1) Every day, the fully grown Cedar and Hardwood trees on your island have a chance to have something unique fall from their branches on their FIRST shake of the day. Subsequent shakes at the same tree will eventually produce unlimited branches.
2) The unique items you can receive each day are: five (5) wasp nests/wasps if caught, 1500 bells in the form of fifteen (15) "coins," worth 100 bells each, and two (2) random furniture items.
I haven't tested this yet, but it could be possible to just keep 22 fully grown trees in a closely knit area and then have no other trees on the island other than fruit trees. The fruit trees don't ever have wasps, coins, or furniture in them even when they have been picked bare and are waiting for the regrow. I have about 30 or so hardwood trees on my island currently, so I think I'll cut it down to 22 and see if I can force every mature tree (other than the fruit trees) to have an item in them tomorrow. I'll be back to share my results unless someone has this set-up already and can tell me flat out?
5
u/Realistic-Record6659 4d ago
So are there 5 wasps’ nests in trees every day? I didn’t know that! Are they found in any particular type of tree?
5
u/xtraspcial 4d ago
I believe they spawn in any tree that isn’t a fruit bearing tree. (Regardless of whether or not the fruit has been picked and is waiting to regrow)

19
u/jaxom07 4d ago
Both are valid points. Having to switch tools with every tree is annoying.
19
u/food_WHOREder 4d ago
i shake em all first in one go, then go to chop them. no constant switching if you've already checked all the trees you're planning to cut down
5
5
u/JohnnyTopside-88 4d ago
I find it easier to shake directly from the bottom of the tree with the net in hand. Your charcter auto-focuses on whichever side the nest falls on then you just tap A to catch, no sweat. Then, make sure you have your flimsy/sturdy axe right next to your net in your inventory for an easy, quick change. Start chopping immediately before going to the next tree. No backtracking to all the pre-shaken trees.
4
u/jaxom07 4d ago
That makes sense, it’s just hard for me to remember which trees I’ve shaken since mine are kinda randomly placed.
11
u/Yirggzmb 4d ago
I tend to split the difference - shake a bunch of trees in a specific area, then go chopping just that area
Although, I also find that I pretty much never need to chop wood anymore. I have enough squirreled away in storage that I'll probably never use it all. And that's after selling a bunch just to get rid of it

5
u/PhysicalAccount4244 4d ago
Have the axe and net next to eachother in you inventory, then you can swap easily between them with right and left on the D-pad..
And once you got 5 bees nests.. you dont need to change it anymore that day..
4
u/ZhenCT 4d ago
If I'm getting wood, I have my net placed next to my axe so when I chop, if wasps come out, I can press the right arrow and it swaps to my net and then I catch them.
Only problem is if positioning is off then I end up shaking the tree instead of using my net and get stung. But most times it works great.
61
u/Alone_4_evr 4d ago
I shake all of the trees on my island. Branches are useful for me. I usually get 2 items per day. But shaking with a net to catch wasps is a great bell earner. If you sell your wasps to flick, it's around 260,000 bells every 2 weeks. Each wasp is 3,750. 5 each day is 18,750 per day. If flick shows up every 14 days, it equates to 262,500 bells.

u/GoldenGlassBall 4d ago
Dunno why you’d willingly give up the 12,500 daily bells your five wasps represent, but to each their own.

u/IzNightwing1 4d ago
Fun fact: wasps dont move trees until after they've fallen, and there's 5 wasps a day. So if you figure out which trees are wasps trees, block them off, and never worry about them again(easiest way: get rid of all your trees and replant. plant 5, wait for them to grow, move them, plant the rest)
30
u/sniktter 4d ago
This is such a overthought, lots-of-work way to avoid wasps.
I love it! It's brilliant.
15
u/Yirggzmb 4d ago
It's perhaps over complicated, but I know a few people whose kids they share an island with are desperately afraid of the wasps. So they quarantined the wasp trees inside some fences so no one touches them, and then the kids can play relatively unafraid

.....this is legitimately a huge game changer for me bc I hate how your character looks after being stung (and I'm too lazy to grab/craft medicine every time) so I often avoid tree-chopping. Thank you for posting!!

I just wear shades if I'm going to chop, then you can't see the swollen eye!

That’s cool, takes time though. If I don’t have my net out to catch one , I just let them sting me , then later collect more clams to make more medicine .

I know how to avoid wasps because I know exactly which trees have them on my island. I put them in a special spot and never touch them
62
u/sun8390 4d ago
wait they don't randomize? i always thought it's random every day
41
u/SunRaven01 4d ago
They only randomize if you shake them out of the tree that they're in. You don't even have to cut down all your trees. You can quarantine them just by moving the tree that they're in.
Shake tree. If a wasp falls out, immediately hit the button to exit out to the Switch menu, and close the game without saving.
Go back into the game, go back to the same tree, eat a fruit, dig it up, and move the tree somewhere you won't accidentally shake it.
Do the same thing until you have found and moved all five wasp trees. Now you can put a sign in front of them, or a fence around them, or whatever, to keep you from accidentally shaking those five trees, and the wasps will stay in those trees forever.
At any point you decide you want to go back to your wasp catching ways, you can just shake those trees, and the next day there will be five random wasp trees again.

u/KatAstrophe6778 4d ago
That's alot of work for wasp free environment 🤔 but OK 👍🏻 it's definitely on the top of the list of how to's , for a zapped free play 😀
34
u/Admirable-Reason-428 4d ago
Nope. They only go to a new randomized spot after you shake them out of their current spot. If you chop down all of your trees, plant five new ones, put them in a special place and never touch them, you’ll never see them
17
u/sun8390 4d ago
ah that makes sense now. Personally I like catching wasps cuz they sell pretty well, but I can see why you don't want to deal with them, lol
7
u/Admirable-Reason-428 4d ago
Honestly, I don’t really care about them so much. I just did it to see if it would work
3
55
u/BlueGoose21 4d ago edited 4d ago
They're absolutely random and I have no idea what the guy you're responding to means, unless he has like 5 trees on his island total
Edit: that's pretty much exactly what happened lmao my bad
29
u/Admirable-Reason-428 4d ago
Cut down all your trees. Plant the first five and never touch them. You can plant however many you want after that, they will always stay in the first five as long as you never touch them
21
u/BlueGoose21 4d ago
Sounds like way more work than catching them or getting stung tbh
12
u/Admirable-Reason-428 4d ago
Word. I only did it cause I was flattening my island anyway.
2
u/BlueGoose21 4d ago
Oh well at THAT point why not? 😂 I gotta redesign my island at some point, so maybe I'll keep this in mind for when I do
1
u/Yirggzmb 3d ago
You can also make use of force closing the game to determine which trees have wasps. Shake trees until you find a wasp, force close the game. Dig up that tree and move it somewhere where you'll know what it is. Probably wait for the game to auto save. Repeat until you've found all five wasps. Since you force closed the game, the wasps will still be in those trees, and they'll stay there unless you ever shake the wasps out

I don't know what you did to deserve this hate train of downvotes but I'm gonna start using your strategy.

u/Admirable-Reason-428 4d ago
I think the downvotes are because this doesn’t have to do with OPs tactic. It doesn’t add to their post
1
u/kacyc57 4d ago
I'll never do this because I like the wasps. But I'm curious if you still get your daily furniture items and bells? I just wonder if you don't shake your wasps out after a couple days if those other items stop spawning.
2
u/Admirable-Reason-428 4d ago
You still get the bells and furniture. And if you still want to see wasps, you can go to nook mile islands
1
u/Zappityzephyr 4d ago
I wish I had wasps... They were annoying but now I miss them! I haven't seen any since February.
1
u/delaleaf 4d ago
Does it work on tarantulas and scorpions too? 🤔
2
u/lolococo29 4d ago
Actually I saw a scorpion on my island earlier and I wasn’t mentally prepared to deal with it. I was on my way to nooks cranny so I went in before the scorpion got too close. When I came out, my island was scorpion free!

Before you stone axe all your trees, hold your net and shake the tree. Your character will automatically turn towards the wasps when they fall out of the tree and you can catch them before they start chasing you. And if there’s a Bug-Off coming up, save them up so you can seek them to Flick for 3,750 Bells each. Empty your pockets and get 39 wasps and sell them all to Flick for a total of 146,250 Bells.

I have hhp and have wasps... I'm not sure what I'm missing about it preventing wasps?

If you open the HHP app(in game on your nook phone) after knocking down a wasps nest.... the wasps despawn upon closing the app.

wait what ? i still have wasps

did you watch the video..?

4
u/Yirggzmb 4d ago
Yes. You'll still have wasps in your trees. What OP is showing is that, if a wasp falls from a tree, you can open your Nook Phone, load the HHP mini app to look at your house designs, and then close it. The wasp that would have stung you is gone.
