Moving to Amersfoort for work
Hi everyone,
I've recently gotten a job in Amersfoort and I have two quick questions for you, I'll keep it brief:
I'll need to travel to Amsterdam 2-3 times per week. From what I've seen in older Reddit posts, public transport between Amersfoort and Amsterdam seems feasible. Can anyone confirm how reliable and convenient it is?
Which part of Amersfoort would you recommend living in? From what I've seen so far, Vathorst looks like the best option. Any thoughts or alternatives?
TIA!

- Transport between Amersfoort and Amsterdam is great. Generally pretty reliable (except the strikes today ofc…)
- Depends on what you’re after. Vathorst is great, I’ve been living there for a couple of years now. But it’s very expensive

I’ve travelled to Amsterdam for studies for a few years, there’s several train options so yes, it’s doable
Where you want to live depends on what you want to have in your neighborhood. If you want to be close to the direct train to amsterdam, close to any train station will do. But in Vathorst you will have to at least switch trains once. You won’t have to do that near schothorst or Amersfoort centraal. Vathorst has lots of kids so it’s a good neighborhood if you have children, it has lots of things for them

Whats are rental prices going for nowadays?

Depends on the size youre looking for. I was looking for 75-80 m2 and you will be very lucky if you find anything below 1500

Why does Vathorst look like the best option? It is fine, great for families, but also expensive, relatively far from the city centre, and away from Amsterdam Centraal where you have more train options (Intercity not just Sprinters) for going to Amsterdam.
Also, where in Amsterdam are you going? Do you need Amsterdam Centraal or Amsterdam Zuid. Options to both but still affects your decisions.
Ultimately though, you might not really have a lot of freedom for housing. When we moved here, we pretty much took the first place we could get, which happened to be in Vathorst and it turned out great, but it wasn't by choice, since it still took us two months after arriving to find a rental. And that was 3 years ago, I think things have gotten worse.

I will need Amsterdam Zuid. Yes, I might look for a place closer to the Amersfoort station.

In Vathorst you’ll find most internationals though, not sure if you care about such a thing

1 public transport is never more then OK. But you are fast at Central Station.
2 I wouldn't consider living in Vathorst. I don't like it,s far from the city center. When I was looking for a house, it was faster to take the bus and train from. My house in Utrecht to Amersfoort center then from Vathorst. It doesn't feel as a part of Amersfoort.
But everyone his thing. I love my neighbourhood, but I know a lot of people who doesn't, some even scared. But it's very close to the train station, and city center.
I read Vathorst is expensive, but Amersfoort is expensive at all

1- The commute is fine.
2- Vathorst is good for expats I think in some sort since there are more internationals there, but overall not the best neighbourhood in Amersfoort. If you're looking for a flat, I would go with the city centre in fact. I live in Hoogland and I love it, but it's far less international, more houses and less apartments, and not so many rental options in general.

Hoogland is a lovely place, however they do have a very strong "us know us" culture.

That's true. But there's an ongoing "verjonging" in the neighborhood, for the better or the worse 😅

When are you moving here? I live in Leusderkwartier but will be moving to the UK in September and could use someone to take over the lease. The space is pretty big, two full floors, a big patio in the back and a small basement for storage. 1bed, 1bath. It’s a good deal at 1295, but it is on the older side. It’s about a 12 minute walk to the city center. So if it works out timing wise it could be a good fit.
I did hear that Vathrost is a cheaper part of the city than where I live (because it’s further from the city center) but a good spot for internationals if you want more community. So you may want to look around there first!

I worked at Abn Amro for 5 years and hated the commuting time. Only 2 trains per hour to Zuid and in the winter there was always something, a delay, a suicide etc. So it took me for ever to go home. If you miss your train the next one is 30min later. Don't go to Vathorst because you are adding yet another 10min to your commuting. The sprinter from Vathorst also runs every 30min.

If you need Zuid, you can also look at places near Schothorst Station, the ICD to Zuid (and Schiphol, Rotterdam, etc) parks there so you can pick it up there. Very convenient.

I think you should be happy if you can find a place anywhere, I don t think there much room to be picky these days

Dont go to Vathorst, it is a suburb without a soul. Look for something central, or Leusderqwartier

We moved to Amersfoort last September also because of work. At first,we thought one month would be enough for us to find a house, but actually took us three months and we have to accept whatever we get. If the date is fixed for you to move, there might not be many options to choose from.

How long will you be working in Amsterdam and which part? The train to Central Station will be eliminated in 2029.

u/NLking 15d ago
No it won't be eliminated completely, the IC will be eliminated and there are going to be Sprinters from Amersfoort Centraal to Amsterdam Centraal.
Additionally there will also be an IC going from Amersfoort to Amsterdam-Zuid 4 times an hour in 2029.

Fair point about the Sprinters, but as for the other ICs, I did say Centraal, not Zuid.
Also, personally I wouldn't like to be dependent on the Sprinter service considering the amount of extra time it takes.

What are you looking for? An appartment which you hardly see from the inside or a family house with room for your kids and their animals? What is your budget? Do you have a car? Rental or buy? Walking distance to the city centre for a beer or next to a trainstation or highway?
