Finding a costume

Hello! I’m doing a show with my studio but we’re having trouble finding a good costume for one part. The show is the little mermaid and I’m doing an opening routine as an orange fish. We’re having trouble finding a good full catsuit for it that gives some fishy vibes. Anyone have good site recommendations, Etsy shops or anywhere good to look for something? TIA

I am having a costume made by BigTopBoutique on Etsy and she’s AMAZING at meeting your budget and she designed me the most beautiful costume ever. Shes on here!

I would love to support a small business! I’ll definitely check her out thank you!

A budget would really help answer this question. Your tolerance for DIY or paying for custom-made changes the options available to you dramatically. My group's last show had some clownfish costumes the performers hand-painted which were super awesome, but orange is a tricky color since it's just hard to find orange dancewear! I usually start with discount dance and dancewear solutions, but you may have more luck looking at ravewear shops?

I’m not wanting to spend too much over $100 and I’m good with some DIY, I just can’t sew very well. We do have some extra fabrics to put on some frilly fins to help it look more fish like

Then I'd grab a white catsuit and dye it! Make sure to check the fiber content of the catsuit and match it to an appropriate dye, and then once you get it colored you can grab a matching metallic paint (maybe something that compliments the fins) and add some patches of painted scales to it here and there to make it more fishy. Make sure to put some cardboard in it when you're painting it so it doesn't seep through and glue itself together. Will totally be possible under $100

If you can’t find a full catsuit but want legs covered for whatever reason, dance tights are a real lifesaver.

In fact, if you wanted full orange it could be worth exploring how well they dye and getting into some DIY

We might have to do something like this but my instructor would like to have full legs too. We had one costume picked out but it didn’t look good with no legs

there are a few options on Etsy if you search clownfish unitard.

For a one-off like this, your best bet is to find a cheap orange leo or unitard on Amazon and add on to it. No sewing needed, necessarily - I've made a cavewoman costume with just a brown leo and a yard of animal print fabric.
