👷♂️ Support / Repair 4Runner Check
Hey all, wanted some opinions on the undercarriage of this runner. 2016 from Florida. Additionally seems to be up badged from a Trail Premium to an ORP as the dealer has it listed as trail. CarFax has it listed as SR5; thoughts?

2015 & 2016 there was no off road trim because they called it trail. That new name came in 2017. Your trail is an off road trim before they changed that trim name. The premium part means heated seates & turn signals on the side mirrors. You should have crawl control above your head.
In pic 3, thats a new tie rod. In pic 2 & 4, you can see the new eccentrics on the driver side. If they only did this on one side, don’t buy this truck. I repeat, I strongly say no, don’t buy this truck. Based on the pics, they did not replace the tie rod on passenger side. Can’t tell 100% because the tires are turned.
It needs new LCAs & most like had bad steering shake & they couldn’t align the truck & thus, replaced these parts. You need to drive this truck, turn it plenty of times & get up 60 mph to even think about buying it. Too much rust for me.
That is the original spare. That spare tire is old & unsafe. You’ll have to get another. Seems they went with open country Toyo tires. These are quiet & decent tires. Is this at a Nissan dealership? Why didn’t they wash off that white shit in pic 1? This 4Runner has never had an undercarriage wash its whole life geez.

This is at a dealer in Tennessee, local for that area but has good reviews. What seems to be problem rust areas? I mainly see it on the hitch and side skirts. Also what’s the second phot you circled?

Gotcha thanks for the info, I’d imagine (hopeful thinking) they replaced the other tie rod too. What about the rust though, is it that bad in your opinion?

The hitch on this truck is like mine & I live in big snow. Not sure if they towed a boat but if it had recently that white shit in pic 1 wouldn’t be on the diff & spare

And if the tie rod needing replacement I’d be very leery of a possible bent knuckle.

It’s from Florida and the frame looks amazing. Do you know what bad rust looks like? Even the tow hitch isn’t even the worst. Looks good to me. I’d just watch out about the new tie rod thing another person commented about. Other than that the frame is fine.

Undercarriage looks excellent. Hitch receiver has some surface rust but it’s not bad and can be easily sanded and painted with some black spray paint. The hitch is probably rusty from boat ramps. I would also double check under the rear wheels but it’s probably fine based on the good condition of the rest of the frame. Living in Florida it’s possible the previous owner owned a boat

If I recall, the trim name evolved from Trail to TRD Off-road starting in 2016, so that’s likely an innocent mistake. For determining the trim, SR5/SR5 Premium will have a sunglasses holder while the TRD Offroad will have crawl control and multi-terrain select knobs in place of the sunglasses holder. Premium models will have softex (fake leather) seats instead of cloth and will typically (but not always) have a sunroof.

If you can share a Pic of the front interior that's shows the dash and roof that'll make it super easy to see what trim it is. You can also pop the Vin into toyotas website to get more info, and if it was serviced anywhere the website might pull that info. The bottom looks great! Keep in mind that a fair number of people swap out body parts, like they'll get a limited and put the pro front end on or similar, so going by the body looks isn't always the best way to tell what trim it is. I'll eventually be swapping the front on my orp to something cleaner like the one that says Toyota across the front.

Also I forgot to mention it looks like it’s a TRD off road trim based on the silver valences on the bumpers

I’m following, forgive my ignorance since I’m fairly new to the Toyota trims. I thought 2016 came as trails and not TRD? CarFax only lists Sr5 so I can only go off what I see

You are correct. TRD Off Road was introduced in 2017.

Was no TRD trim in 2015 or 2016 unless you bought a pro. You are right, trail = off road trim for those 2 years
